How the answers frame Walgreens
PeakMetrics asked five assistants (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok) 250 category questions that never named a brand, on 2026-09-29. Walgreens was named in 62 of 1,250 answers. ChatGPT and Perplexity named it 15 times each, Grok 14, Gemini 10 and Claude 8. In this snapshot the retail leaders were named far more often: Walmart in 577 answers, Target in 452 and Costco in 423.
Where Walgreens appeared, it was usually one name in a longer roster. Claude's curbside pickup answer listed it among retailers that offer curbside pickup, next to Walmart, Target, CVS and PetSmart. Grok's answer on the same question listed it among the major retailers compared. The classification of what Walgreens was credited for is thin: the answers tagged it as "Not Substantive" three times and "Customer Experience" once.
The pharmacy questions gave the answers something to say about the brand itself. Grok's answers on trust and on prescription accuracy grouped Walgreens with CVS as large chain drugstores. Both answers pointed to J.D. Power satisfaction data that rated independents, supermarket pharmacies and mass merchandisers higher. Two other answers gave it a different framing. ChatGPT's trust answer cited Morning Consult category leaders that included Walgreens, and its cage-free eggs answer said Walgreens met a commitment ahead of schedule.
By question intent, visibility was highest on loyalty and rewards (13%) and leadership (11%). It was 0% on returns and shipping and on product selection, and 1% on safety. These are single-run figures and will move between runs.
Big national chains like CVS and Walgreens tend to lag behind.
What the press is saying
The PeakMetrics news index recorded 6,106 mentions of Walgreens over the last 30 days, 848 of them with the brand in the headline. The recent headlines are mostly about corporate and financial matters. They include store closure plans scaled back under Sycamore ownership, a Chennai global capability center announcement, dividend cuts affecting an index fund's holdings, and a gift card scam that also named Walmart, Target and CVS. One item was a routine retail promotion for photo prints.
Walgreens met its commitment ahead of schedule…
The gap
The press story is about ownership, store footprint and corporate finance. The AI story is about where Walgreens sits in lists and in pharmacy satisfaction comparisons. None of the supplied headlines touch the J.D. Power-style trust framing that shaped Grok's pharmacy answers.
Press volume and answer visibility also do not track each other. Best Buy has a similar news count (5,591 mentions) but was named in 155 answers, against 62 for Walgreens. Kroger has about 3.6 times Walgreens' news volume and was named in 156 answers. Heavy coverage did not translate into heavy presence in these answers, and the coverage that exists is not the material the assistants drew on.
What to watch
For a comms team, the pharmacy trust and reliability questions are where these answers say something specific about Walgreens, and they lean on third-party satisfaction studies. Those cited domains, J.D. Power in particular, are worth tracking, since they carry more of the framing than the company's own news flow does in this snapshot.
Also worth watching are the questions where Walgreens is absent, such as returns, shipping and product selection, and the loyalty and rewards questions where it was most visible. Ask whether the brand wants to be in those answers. Because live answers vary between runs, treat this as one measurement and re-run the benchmark questions before drawing conclusions.
