How the answers frame United Airlines
On 28 September 2026, United was named in 12 of 25 answers to category questions that never mentioned a brand. Claude, Gemini and Grok named it in three of five answers each, ChatGPT in two and Perplexity in one. The credits fell mainly into two themes: reliability and operations (four) and sustainability and ethics (four). Customer experience got two.
The reliability answers disagreed. Claude cited WalletHub, placing United second and saying it had the lowest rate of cancellations, delays, mishandled luggage and denied boardings. Gemini said United "often ranks highly" on reliability. ChatGPT and Grok placed it behind the leaders on delays and on-time performance, and Grok grouped it with American and Southwest as trailing on on-time arrivals. The differences track the source each assistant used, not one shared view.
The sustainability answers were more consistent. ChatGPT pointed to United's net-zero roadmap and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) use, citing United's own corporate impact site. Claude mentioned its Sustainable Flight Fund. Gemini named its "Flight to Net Zero" initiative. Perplexity, its only appearance in this set, credited United with committing to net zero by 2050 without voluntary carbon offsets.
On business travel, Gemini pointed to MileagePlus, Star Alliance and Polaris. Grok said United "often ranks #1 for global business travel." In the question about airlines to avoid, Grok said American and United often rank in the middle-to-lower half for economy.
American and United tend to lag the leaders in many delay-focused rankings.
What the press is saying
The PeakMetrics news index recorded 19,798 mentions of United over the last 30 days, 1,350 with the brand in the headline. That is the second-largest volume among the six airlines in this comparison.
The five recent headlines supplied cover an institutional investor's stock position, a transatlantic Boeing 777 diverting to Bangor after a passenger bit a flight attendant, a gate-delivery service for food and essentials, a Flight 93 flag marking the 25th anniversary of 9/11, and Pratt & Whitney delivering its first GTF Advantage-powered aircraft to United.
…highlights being the first U.S. passenger airline to use SAF blends at Newark and Washington Dulles.
The gap
Press volume and answer visibility do not move together in this snapshot. American Airlines has the most news mentions (32,299) but was named in only 4 of 25 answers. Delta has fewer mentions (13,994) and was named in 20. United sits between them on both measures, level with JetBlue on answers despite roughly four times JetBlue's news volume.
The subjects differ as well. The five sampled headlines are about finance, an onboard incident, a service launch, a commemoration and fleet deliveries. None concerns on-time performance or emissions, which are the two themes the assistants credited most. The answers drew instead on rankings such as WalletHub, DOT data and company sustainability disclosures.
What to watch
This is a single snapshot from five assistants, and live answers vary between runs, so it is not a ranking or a trend. Within it, the reliability story is the one to track, because the assistants gave United opposite placements depending on the metric and source. Comms teams could check which third-party rankings and DOT tables the answers draw on, since those sources shape the framing.
The sustainability credit leans on United's own published material, including its corporate impact pages. Comms teams could ask whether that material is current and easy for assistants to cite, and whether the same benchmark questions surface it again in later runs.
