In AI answers, Tripadvisor is the place to check reviews, not a brand they recommend

Across these assistant answers, Tripadvisor usually appears as a research step after the assistant has already named hotel brands or booking platforms. The press covers it as an awards program, and the two stories barely overlap.

The evidence

One snapshot, measured September 29, 2026. These figures come from one quarterly run of 1,250 answers (95% range 7–10%), not a ranking or a trend. The questions never named Tripadvisor.

How the answers frame Tripadvisor

In this snapshot (29 September 2026), five assistants answered 250 benchmark questions each, none naming a brand. Tripadvisor was named in 106 of the 1,250 answers. By provider that was Grok 37 of 250, Gemini 29, Claude 18, ChatGPT 17 and Perplexity 5.

In the five stored answers that named it, Tripadvisor is mostly a pointer. Claude's answer on family-friendly hotels listed Disney, Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt and budget chains, then closed by sending the reader to review sites. Its answer on a stay for parents in their 70s did the same, advising the user to check noise and bed comments on 'sites like TripAdvisor'.

Gemini's answer for a first-time international traveler put it in a 'research and comparison' group, apart from booking. That answer's main advice was to book directly with the airline or hotel. In the ChatGPT answer on which platforms have the most users, Tripadvisor comes third in a traffic-based list, after Booking.com and Trip.com. The stored text cuts off at that entry.

Where the assistants attached a credit to Tripadvisor, it was thin: 'Not Substantive' three times and 'Price & Value' once. Visibility varied by question type. It was highest on trust questions (28%), followed by avoid and room-experience questions (19% each). It was near zero on value (1%) and absent on loyalty and perks (0%).

I'd recommend checking recent reviews on travel sites like TripAdvisor or Google Hotels to see current guest experiences, as quality can vary by location.
Claude, answering “What are the most well-regarded family-friendly hotel brands?”

What the press is saying

PeakMetrics' news index shows 6,875 mentions of Tripadvisor over the last 30 days, 688 of them with the brand in the headline. The recent headlines are dominated by Travelers' Choice Awards coverage, including the 'Best of the Best Restaurants' announcement and local winners such as a Maui snorkeling operator and an Orlando restaurant celebrating a fourth consecutive year.

A second strand treats Tripadvisor as a source of rankings, as in a headline about what it called the best thing to do in the US. A third is promotional, such as a Visit Orlando sweepstakes listing.

Great for comparing hotel prices across various sites and reading authentic, verified guest reviews.
Gemini, answering “As a first-time international traveler, which booking platforms can I count on for accurate listings and easy refunds?”

The gap

Press coverage is high for a brand with modest answer visibility. Among the 15 peers in this sector set, Tripadvisor's 6,875 news mentions exceed those of Booking.com (4,719), IHG (3,885), Vrbo, Priceline, Best Western and Choice Hotels. Its answer count of 106 is below every one of those except Vrbo, Priceline, Best Western and Choice, which sit at 92 to 100. Booking.com and IHG were named in 377 and 428 answers.

The stories also differ in kind. The press story is about awards for restaurants, attractions and local businesses. The answer story is about Tripadvisor as a review destination for hotel and platform decisions. Nothing in the stored answers mentions Travelers' Choice.

What to watch

This is one snapshot, and live answers vary between runs, so treat the pattern as a prompt for further measurement rather than a ranking. The pattern to test is whether Tripadvisor keeps appearing as the closing 'go read reviews' step, and whether the awards story ever reaches the answers.

The intent split is worth tracking. Trust questions produced the most visibility here, while value and loyalty questions produced almost none. A comms team would want to know which sources the assistants cite when they describe guest reviews, and whether the awards coverage is among them.

How this was measured

Measured September 29, 2026. 250 unbranded questions per sector, asked to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok on their product models, with web search on. Refreshed quarterly.

This is a snapshot, not a ranking or a trend: AI answers vary from run to run. It shows whether a brand appeared and which sources were cited, not how favorably it was described. The paid platform tracks favorability daily.

Full method

In an early five-question test, the same brand went from 40% to 30% to 70% visibility across three runs, which is why every figure here is dated and treated as a snapshot.

The questions cover 13 intents, such as reliability, value for money and customer service. A model drafted them, a review pass removed paraphrases and questions that point to one company, and every question was checked so that none names a measured brand. Each was asked once per assistant in run 2026Q4.

Every visibility figure comes with a 95% range (a Wilson interval). Where two brands' ranges overlap, treat them as tied. The figures use all 1,250 answers. The quotes in the story come from a stratified sample of 60 of them, spread across every assistant and intent.
