How the answers frame TotalEnergies
PeakMetrics asked 250 category questions that never named a brand, across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok, on 2026-09-29. That produced 1,250 answers, and TotalEnergies was named in 90 of them. Among the 15 energy peers in the data, ExxonMobil (169), Shell (160) and Chevron (158) were named most often. TotalEnergies sat mid-table.
The mentions were uneven by assistant: Grok 36 of 250, ChatGPT 23, Gemini 16, Perplexity 10, Claude 5. They were also uneven by question intent. Visibility was highest on leadership (25%), sustainability (23%), innovation (16%) and investment returns (13%). It was 0% on reliability, value, service and clean energy options, and 1% on plan and billing.
The sampled answers show the pattern. Gemini's revenue ranking listed TotalEnergies among the top energy companies, describing it as a major oil and gas player with expanding renewables. Perplexity used it in an emissions-disclosure answer, and Grok placed it among green hydrogen developers. ChatGPT's answer on renewables versus buybacks named it, but its own working text said the data on TotalEnergies' renewables spending was insufficient.
The credited-for tags in the data are thin (Financial Performance, Sustainability & Ethics, and Not Substantive, one each), so the themes above come mainly from the answer text and the intent breakdown.
A 2022 review of eight major producers found that only TotalEnergies, Shell, Equinor, and Chevron publicly reported Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions for 2016–2019.
What the press is saying
PeakMetrics' news index logged 9,905 mentions of TotalEnergies over the last 30 days, 2,140 with the brand in the headline. That is more than Exxon-adjacent peers such as Duke Energy or PG&E and well below Chevron (30,821) and Shell (16,227).
The recent headlines cluster around three storylines. One is sport sponsorship, with several TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and Afcon qualifier stories. The second is upstream gas, including an Azerbaijan gas investment and steps toward a final investment decision on Papua LNG. The third is a French controversy over cut-price gas.
Among the top developers of green hydrogen production capacity, with investments across dozens of smaller-scale projects (around 30 noted in one analysis).
The gap
The press story is operational and local: sponsorship, project decisions and a consumer pricing row. The AI story is a corporate-positioning one, in which TotalEnergies appears as one of several majors compared on transition credentials, disclosure and scale.
The French pricing controversy and the football sponsorship do not show up in the sampled answers. Questions closest to customer experience, such as reliability, service and billing, returned almost no visibility for the brand. Coverage volume also did not track answer presence. ConocoPhillips has fewer news mentions in the index (9,166) yet was named in fewer answers (59), while Chevron had roughly three times the news volume and was named far more often (158).
A major player in traditional oil and gas as well as expanding renewable energy portfolios.
What to watch
For a comms team, the takeaway from this single snapshot is that the assistants tie TotalEnergies to the transition and disclosure debate. Whether the answers describe that position accurately is worth checking, since one answer cited a 2022 review as its basis and another said the underlying spending data was unclear.
The near-absence on service, value and plan-and-billing questions means customer-facing narratives, including the French gas pricing story, are not being carried by these assistants here. Live answers vary between runs, so treat these figures as one dated reading, not a ranking. Repeat the benchmark questions before drawing conclusions.
