How the answers frame Subway
This snapshot was measured on 2026-09-29 across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok, using 250 benchmark questions per assistant that never named a brand. Subway was named in 202 of 1,250 answers. That is ninth among the 15 restaurant brands in the set, well behind McDonald's (634) and Chick-fil-A (472). Grok named it most often (62 of 250). Perplexity (27) and Claude (28) named it least.
Two contexts recur in the sampled answers. The first is scale. ChatGPT's answer to the question about which chains have the most locations named Subway alongside McDonald's and Starbucks. Gemini's franchisor answer said Subway "continues to hold the title for the highest number of locations in the U.S." Perplexity's sales table put Subway tenth by 2025 U.S. systemwide sales, at $9.2 billion. Subway is a size reference in these answers even where it is not a sales leader.
The second is menu health. Visibility was highest on the menu_health (34%) and trust (33%) question intents, followed by leadership (27%). In the sandwich-health ranking question, Perplexity put Subway first, Gemini listed it first among the chains it described, and Claude placed it fourth in a "Mid Tier", citing an American Heart Association approval. The framing is qualified. Perplexity added "watch sodium, sauces, and processed meats."
Subway also appears in less flattering company. Gemini's answer on harassment and workplace violence listed Subway among brands where labor research had documented concerns. ChatGPT's animal-welfare reasoning noted that for Subway the sources were lacking. On older Americans, Gemini and Perplexity placed Subway third in fast-food consideration, and Perplexity noted the survey measured consideration, not trust.
Visibility is thin where the category is about experience. Delivery convenience (6%), innovation (5%) and service (8%) were the lowest intents. The credited-for tags are also sparse: eight were Not Substantive, one Sustainability & Ethics and one Financial Performance. Those are small counts.

What the press is saying
PeakMetrics' news index shows 1,415 Subway mentions over the last 30 days, 201 with the brand in the headline. The recent headlines fall into three storylines: the launch of the "Feed Your SUBconscious" brand platform starring Will Arnett, with a follow-up interview; a customer who went viral after being charged extra to toast bread; and a piece on UK franchise costs.
Volume is modest for the category. McDonald's (22,451) and Starbucks (23,967) are far larger. Subway's total is closer to Panera Bread (1,331) and Sweetgreen (1,526).

The gap
The press story is about marketing and a customer-service flashpoint. The AI story is about scale, franchising and whether the menu can be eaten healthily. Neither the Arnett campaign nor the toasting-fee episode appears in the sampled answers.
Relative to news volume, Subway's answer presence is high in this snapshot. Dunkin' has 6,605 news mentions but was named in 99 answers. Subway has 1,415 mentions and was named in 202. Press attention and AI visibility are different measures, and here they diverge. This is one run of live answers, not a ranking.
Broad customization and plenty of vegetable-forward or lean-protein builds; watch sodium, sauces, and processed meats.
What to watch
A comms team would note that the assistants reach for Subway on size and healthy-menu questions, and that the health framing arrives with caveats about sodium and processed meats. Those caveats are the parts of the story others are writing.
Also worth tracking is how much of Subway's answer presence depends on the assistant. Grok named it more than twice as often as Claude or Perplexity. Where the brand is named on employer or safety topics, the context is category-wide concern, not a Subway-specific finding. Repeat runs are needed before treating any of this as stable.
