How the answers frame Subaru
PeakMetrics asked five assistants (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok) 250 category questions that never named a brand, on 2026-09-29. Subaru was named in 264 of the 1,250 answers. Grok named it most often (86 of 250) and Perplexity least (32 of 250). Visibility varied sharply by question type: it was highest on trust, service and safety questions and close to absent on innovation, leadership and EV charging and range.
The strongest framing was dealer service. In Claude's answer to a 72-year-old asking who would pick up the phone, Subaru led the list on dealer-service satisfaction. Claude's answer on honesty put Subaru second among mass-market brands on satisfaction, behind Toyota. Gemini's answer on safety for older drivers described Subaru as often praised for outward visibility, simple controls and EyeSight driver assistance.
One Perplexity answer, on corporate values, gave Subaru a distinct social-impact role by citing a Forbes brand ranking. Elsewhere Subaru was a supporting name. It was listed alongside Toyota, Honda and Mazda on resale value and turbocharged-engine dependability, and it appeared as one entry in Claude's cheapest-EV list. The classifier's tags for what Subaru was credited for were mostly 'Not Substantive', which fits this pattern of short mentions inside lists.
These are single snapshots of live answers. They are not a ranking.
Subaru ranks highest in satisfaction with dealer service among mass market brands…
What the press is saying
PeakMetrics' news index shows 9,567 mentions of Subaru in the last 30 days, 1,543 of them with Subaru in the headline. That is well below several sector peers in the index, including Toyota, Honda and Hyundai, and closer to Mazda and Stellantis.
The sample headlines are about product and the used-car market. They include a Solterra lease takeover listing, a new Outback confirmed for South Africa, a 1997 Impreza WRX STI for sale, and two 'one comes out ahead' comparisons against the Toyota RAV4 and the Toyota Crown Signia.
…it ranked third overall in Forbes’ 2026 Best Brands for Social Impact and was the highest-rated automotive brand for the fourth year running.
The gap
The press story is about vehicles: listings, launches and head-to-head comparisons, often with Toyota as the foil. The AI story is about the company's standing: dealer service satisfaction, safety and social impact.
The two share one feature. In both, Subaru is most often placed next to Toyota. The assistants also cited third-party surveys and rankings, such as satisfaction scores, Forbes and Consumer Reports-style studies, which do not appear in the sample headlines. Where the answers credited Subaru, they leaned on those sources rather than on product coverage.
What to watch
A comms team would take three things from this snapshot. First, service, trust and safety questions are where the assistants named Subaru, and the answers pulled that language from third-party satisfaction and ratings studies. Which studies get cited matters more here than press volume.
Second, Subaru barely surfaced on innovation, leadership or EV charging questions. In the one EV-price answer sampled, it appeared as a single line item. The Solterra and Uncharted may be worth tracking as separate benchmark questions.
Third, Grok and Perplexity differed sharply in how often they named Subaru, so each assistant deserves its own read. Answers vary between runs, so repeat the benchmark questions before treating any of this as a pattern.
