How the answers frame Sony PlayStation
On 2026-09-29 we put 250 benchmark questions that never named a brand to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok. That produced 1,250 answers, and Sony PlayStation was named in 583 of them. That is more than Xbox (515) or Nintendo (503). Grok named it most often (154 of 250 answers) and Perplexity least (90 of 250).
Most of those mentions are lineup mentions. In the sampled answers, PlayStation typically appears alongside Nintendo and Xbox on trust, reliability, innovation and sustainability questions. The credit tags point the same way. Of the credits recorded for the brand, the largest group was tagged 'Not Substantive'. Only a few were tied to labour, financial performance, sustainability, customer experience, safety or reliability.
When the answers do add detail, it is specific and mixed. ChatGPT's trust answer put Nintendo first and described Sony and Microsoft as usually behind it. Grok's reliability answer named Nintendo as generally regarded as most reliable, and it cited French after-sales data in which Sony had the lowest reliability score. Perplexity's climate answer gave Sony a net-zero-by-2040 target. Claude's refund answer described a 14-day PlayStation Store refund window. Perplexity's answer for story-driven games pointed readers to PlayStation for narrative-led exclusives.
Visibility varies a lot by question type. PlayStation was named in 68% of leadership answers and 65% of game library and exclusives answers. It appeared in only 18% of monetization practices answers and 10% of online community moderation answers. Reliability (34%) and employer (36%) were also low.
Sony targets net zero by 2040 and has committed to renewable electricity for its operations by 2030…
What the press is saying
PeakMetrics' news index recorded 26,590 mentions of Sony PlayStation over the last 30 days, 4,354 of them with the brand in the headline. That is close to Xbox (26,577) and above Nintendo (22,662).
The recent headlines are about product and studio news. They cover a State of Play showcase with an extended look at Final Fantasy VII Revelation, a second State of Play with a PS Japan appearance, and a Housemarque co-founder leaving the studio after 31 years. One headline reports that Sony ditched Kojima's PHYSINT over ballooning costs and missed deadlines. A retailer gift-card deal also appears.
PlayStation Store allows refunds as long as it's within 14 days of purchase and the content hasn't been streamed or downloaded.
The gap
The press story is about what PlayStation is showing and shipping, and about who is joining or leaving its studios. The AI story is about how PlayStation compares with peers on trust, reliability, refunds, climate targets and employer reputation. None of the sampled answers built on the studio-departure or cancelled-project headlines.
Coverage volume does not explain answer volume. Roblox has 7,713 news mentions but appears in 134 answers. Valve has 2,994 mentions and appears in 406. PlayStation and Xbox have near-identical news totals, yet the answers named PlayStation more often. Press attention and AI visibility are measuring different things.
What to watch
A comms team would start with the questions where PlayStation is thin or hedged. Monetization practices and community moderation are the two where it was named least often in this snapshot, so those questions are being answered mostly without it. Reliability and trust are the two where the sampled answers named a peer as the pick.
Also check what the answers cite when they do describe Sony. The cited sources shaping those descriptions were third-party surveys, industry assessments and news reports, not Sony's own material. This is a single snapshot of live answers, which vary between runs. Treat it as a baseline to re-measure, not as a ranking.
