How the answers frame SoFi
In this snapshot (measured 2026-09-29; ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok; 250 benchmark questions, 1,250 answers), none of the questions named a brand and SoFi was named in 155 answers. Grok named it most often (46 of 250) and Perplexity least (17 of 250). Chime (241 answers) and PayPal (532) appeared more, and Block (508) and Stripe (269) did as well.
In the ten stored answers we read, SoFi almost always shows up as the second name in a neobank list, next to Chime. The recurring frame is structural. Gemini's answer on a dependable only-checking account said SoFi holds a banking charter and called it a broader, full-service alternative. ChatGPT's answer on partner-bank risk pointed to SoFi Bank as FDIC-insured and as closer to a chartered bank than app-first fintechs. Grok's ranking also grouped SoFi with Varo as holding its own national bank charter.
Two other roles appear. Gemini's profitability answer credited SoFi's lending and cross-selling. Gemini's fraud-handling answer described its digital security features. The credited-for tags are thin: Safety & Compliance (3), Reliability & Operations (1), Financial Performance (1), and three answers tagged Not Substantive. By question intent, visibility was highest on value and money-movement speed (22% each) and trust (20%). It was lowest on safety, service and avoidance-style questions.
Early direct deposit is a second thread. In ChatGPT's and Grok's answers SoFi sits in the early-pay group with Chime, along with caveats that early access depends on the employer's payroll timing. In Claude's answer on fintech employers, SoFi was one name in a long list of companies hiring.
Because it holds a banking charter, it is often viewed as a more robust, full-service alternative to traditional banks.
What the press is saying
PeakMetrics' news index shows 5,015 mentions over the last 30 days, and 1,019 of them carry SoFi in the headline. The recent headlines center on SoFi Bank going live with stablecoin settlement across Mastercard's network, reported as a first for a national bank. Other headlines cover cross-buy engagement, preliminary ratings on a consumer loan trust and a comparison of SoFi with Upstart and Affirm that hinges on deposit funding.
That is a payments-infrastructure, capital-markets and business-model story. For scale, SoFi's press volume is well below PayPal (28,552) and Block (28,448) and is comparable to Wise (4,797).
A diversified US financial platform that has achieved profitability by capturing users through lending (e.g., student loans) and cross-selling a wide range of financial services.
The gap
The press and the assistants are telling different stories. Headlines are about stablecoin settlement, securitization ratings and deposit-funded lending. The sampled answers are about charter status, product breadth and early pay, framed for a consumer choosing a checking account.
Press volume does not track answer presence in this peer set. Chime has 2,155 news mentions and appeared in 241 answers. SoFi has 5,015 and appeared in 155. Coinbase has 28,217 mentions and appeared in 75. Coverage and AI visibility measure different things here.
Only ten of SoFi's 155 answers were supplied, so we cannot say how often stablecoin or Mastercard topics appear across all of them. None of the ten mentioned them.
What to watch
For a comms team, the charter is the asset the answers carry. It shows up across ChatGPT, Gemini and Grok as the reason SoFi is grouped apart from partner-bank neobanks. Checking that the charter description in these answers matches current corporate language is a practical first step.
The recent news themes are not yet visible in the sampled answers. It is worth testing whether benchmark questions on money movement and innovation, where SoFi's visibility was 22% and 17%, begin to reflect the stablecoin announcement.
