How the answers frame Patagonia
This is a snapshot from 2026-09-29: 250 category questions that never named a brand, put to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok, for 1,250 answers in total. Patagonia was named in 59 of them. By assistant, that was Grok 17 of 250, Gemini 16, Claude 9, Perplexity 9 and ChatGPT 8. In the same retail set, Walmart was named in 577 answers, Target in 452 and Costco in 423.
Where Patagonia did appear, the context was narrow. Visibility was highest on sustainability questions (20%), followed by reliability (12%) and trust (11%). It was 0% on value, safety, innovation, leadership, loyalty and rewards, and on the "avoid" questions. The sampled answers match that pattern. ChatGPT's answer on clean supply chains listed Patagonia first and pointed to its supplier code and factory monitoring. Gemini's answer on clothes that survive repeated washing listed it under durable outdoor brands. Grok included it among durable kids' clothing picks.
The classification of what Patagonia was credited for was thin. Three mentions were tagged "Not Substantive" and one "Sustainability & Ethics".
One ChatGPT answer also flagged a category question. In its trust-ranking answer, it cited a poll that listed Patagonia among top brands, then noted the brand's fit with the question.
Famous for its durability and "Worn Wear" program. They offer repairs, and their items are built to withstand heavy use.
What the press is saying
PeakMetrics' news index shows 1,722 mentions of Patagonia in the last 30 days, 351 of them with the name in the headline. That is the lowest news count among the 15 retail names in this comparison set. Walmart has 79,582 and Nike 37,047.
The recent headlines that concern the company are about legal action. They include "Patagonia Sues Trump Admin Over 91% Cut to Bears Ears" and "Patagonia Joins Lawsuit Against Trump’s Order Shrinking Utah National Monuments". Other headlines in the sample, such as a regional news bulletin and a piece asking whether Patagonia is a data center hub, appear to be about the geographic region. Any brand-level count of mentions likely includes some of that noise.
Patagonia is an apparel brand, not strictly retail…
The gap
The press story is public advocacy and litigation. In the sampled answers, no assistant brought up the lawsuits. The AI story is supply-chain transparency, product longevity, repair programs and inclusion in trust lists.
The two stories overlap only loosely. The answers reached Patagonia through consumer questions about buying things, and they treated it as a specialty apparel name next to Carhartt, REI or Hanna Andersson rather than a general retailer. Press attention on the brand's political actions did not show up in the answers we read. This is one snapshot of five stored answers, so it says nothing about whether other runs would differ.
What to watch
A comms team would note that the brand's visibility depends on question type. Sustainability questions surfaced it far more than any other intent, and several intents produced no mentions at all. Broad questions about the best retailers or value went to the large chains.
Two things are worth tracking across future runs. One is whether the assistants begin to mention the current litigation alongside the durability and sourcing framing. The other is which domains they cite when they describe Patagonia's practices. Answers vary between runs, so treat this snapshot as a baseline for comparison rather than a ranking.
