How the answers frame Okta
This snapshot covers 250 benchmark questions that never named a brand, put to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok on 2026-09-29. Okta was named in 131 of the 1,250 answers. By provider it appeared in 39 of 250 Grok answers and 35 of 250 ChatGPT answers, then Gemini (24), Claude (18) and Perplexity (15). Among the 15 cybersecurity brands in the peer set, Microsoft Security (520 answers), CrowdStrike (442) and Palo Alto Networks (404) led on appearances, and Okta sat ninth. The six stored answers below are a sample of its 131 appearances, so treat them as illustrations rather than a count.
In the sampled answers, Okta is the identity entry. Claude's zero trust answer put it under "Identity-Centric Solutions" and described Okta Identity Cloud as "a leading identity and access management platform." Gemini's answer on the most trusted vendors listed Okta among "Other Notable Specialists" under identity security, after naming Palo Alto Networks, CrowdStrike, Fortinet, Microsoft Security, Cisco and Check Point as market leaders.
ChatGPT's answer on cheap multi-factor authentication put Microsoft Entra ID first and Cisco Duo second. It described Okta MFA as a credible option that is more of an identity suite than a low-cost standalone tool. That fits the measured visibility by question intent, where value questions surfaced Okta in only 4% of answers. Leadership questions surfaced it most (23%), followed by safety (17%) and employer (15%).
Okta also appears when the question is about trouble. Gemini's layoffs answer listed Okta among firms with workforce reductions and gave figures for three consecutive years. Gemini's answer on cloud providers that hurt customers described a 2023 breach of Okta's customer support system and named customers who criticised its handling. In the attribute data, the answers credited Okta for "Not Substantive" (3), "Price & Value" (1) and "Safety & Compliance" (1), so few answers attach a specific strength to the name.
Okta Identity Cloud is a leading identity and access management platform that supports Zero Trust architecture through centralized identity control.
What the press is saying
PeakMetrics' news index recorded 7,217 mentions of Okta over the last 30 days, 1,649 with Okta in the headline. The recent headlines are financial and corporate. They cover a 28% stock rally and analyst views on further upside, Wall Street's reaction to Okta's investor day, a September 22 date for investors to note, and the naming of Helen Riley to the board of directors.
The sampled headlines come from small regional and trade-style sites rather than security or business trade titles. This says something about where the coverage was indexed, not about its tone.
The identity security firm has conducted layoffs in three consecutive years, citing restructuring efforts to reallocate resources toward growth priorities.
The gap
The press is talking about Okta as a stock and a company: investor day, analyst upside, a board seat. The assistants talk about it as a category slot (identity), as a lower-cost-ranked alternative in a pricing question, and as an example in questions about layoffs and breaches.
News volume and answer visibility also do not move together across the peer set. Okta's 30-day news count (7,217) is higher than SentinelOne's (4,400), Check Point's (3,533) and Zscaler's (6,891), yet each of those brands was named in more answers than Okta. Cloudflare has more news (9,887) and fewer appearances (110). Press attention did not translate into answer presence in this snapshot.
…is also a credible option, but it’s usually more of a broader identity suite than the cheapest standalone MFA choice.
What to watch
A comms team would take three things from this one-day snapshot. First, in these answers Okta is anchored to identity, so questions about broader security leadership name the platform vendors first. Second, the layoffs and breach questions pull in older events with specific figures, and the investor-day coverage does not appear in the sampled answers. Third, value and detection questions surfaced Okta least often (4% each), and the answers credited it with few concrete strengths.
These are live answers that vary between runs, so the useful next step is to re-run the same benchmark questions and see which of these framings recur. The layoffs and breach framings are worth checking first, since Gemini supplied them for questions that did not name Okta.
