How the answers frame Nationwide
This snapshot, measured on 2026-09-28, covers 25 answers from five assistants (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok) to category questions that never named a brand. Nationwide appeared in 4 of them. All four came from Claude and Grok. ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity did not name it in any of their answers.
The framing split by question. On "Which insurance companies are the most trustworthy?", Claude placed Nationwide third in an auto insurance list behind Travelers and GEICO. Grok grouped it with Travelers as having low complaint indices ("Travelers ~0.52; Nationwide ~0.63") and pointed to carinsurance.com and J.D. Power material.
On the negative-leaning questions, the picture differed. Claude's answer to "Which insurers are worst at paying claims?" listed Nationwide under homeowners insurance and tied it to J.D. Power satisfaction scores. Grok's answer to "Which insurance company should consumers avoid?" declined to name a company to avoid. It listed Nationwide among names with lower complaint indices, alongside American Family, Auto-Owners and Travelers.
The data credits Nationwide for Customer Experience in two answers, and one mention was classed as not substantive. Peers were named more often: State Farm in 13 of 25 answers, Allstate in 8, Progressive, GEICO and Liberty Mutual in 7 each. Nationwide was named in 4.
GEICO is in second place, Nationwide is third, and Progressive and Amica round out the top five…
What the press is saying
PeakMetrics' news index recorded 30,881 mentions of Nationwide in the last 30 days, 1,233 with the name in the headline. That is the highest volume among the peers in this snapshot. State Farm has 9,563, Progressive 9,446 and Allstate 7,729.
The sample headlines suggest a mixed picture. Some concern the insurer: a Nationwide Target Destination Funds Q2 2026 commentary, and Plummer Insurance being inducted into the Nationwide FAST Track Hall of Fame. Others use "nationwide" as a plain adjective, as in a debt financing to "Expand Nationwide", appraisal services "Offered Nationwide" and a care provider that is "Now Nationwide". Because the word is so common, the raw mention count is probably inflated by generic usage. Treat it as an upper bound on coverage of the company.
Nationwide possesses the most regional below-average J.D. Power customer satisfaction scores and poor insurance claims satisfaction scores…
The gap
The press number and the answer number point in opposite directions. Nationwide has the largest news count in its peer set and the smallest share of assistant answers. Its presence in these answers rests on a narrow base: insurance ranking and complaint-data material from a few sources, not the broader corporate news flow.
The sample headlines are about fund commentary, agency awards and businesses expanding "nationwide". None of them touches the trust, complaints or claims-handling themes that shaped the answers. The assistants and the news index are describing different things under the same name.
Both have notably low complaint indices (Travelers ~0.52; Nationwide ~0.63) and competitive satisfaction scores in various studies.
What to watch
For a Nationwide comms team, the first point is coverage. Three of the five assistants did not name the brand in any answer on trust, claims or avoidance. This is a single snapshot, so it shows where the brand can be absent, not a settled position.
The second point is sourcing. The answers that did name Nationwide leaned on complaint-index and satisfaction-study material, and the claims-critique framing came from a J.D. Power-linked statement. Which third-party ratings and roundups the assistants draw on is worth tracking through cited domains.
The third point is measurement. Press volume, especially for a brand name that doubles as a common word, does not predict how often assistants name it. Repeat benchmark questions before reading any movement into a single run.
