How the answers frame Mazda
This snapshot, measured on 2026-09-29, covers 250 benchmark questions put to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok, or 1,250 answers in all. Mazda was named in 158 of them. That is the lowest count among the 16 automakers in the sector set. Toyota appeared in 697 answers, Ford in 560 and Tesla in 557. By provider, Grok named Mazda most often (54 of 250) and Perplexity least (18 of 250).
Visibility varied by question intent. Mazda's highest figures were on safety questions (32%) and reliability questions (27%), followed by value (21%) and resale and ownership cost (20%). It was close to absent on innovation (3%), sustainability (3%), EV charging and range (1%) and leadership (1%).
In the three sampled answers, Mazda was one name in a list. ChatGPT, answering a question about turbocharged engines, worked toward automakers with strong reliability records and named Toyota, Honda, Mazda and Subaru. Gemini, asked about safe brands for a 78-year-old, listed Subaru, Toyota, Hyundai and Mazda and picked out the CX-5 and CX-30. Grok, asked which automakers escalate complaints quickly, grouped Mazda with Acura, Infiniti and Lexus after Toyota. Toyota led each of these lists.
The stored credit tags for Mazda are thin. Each of three labels (Safety & Compliance, Customer Experience, and one marked Not Substantive) appears once.
Recognized for high safety ratings and an intuitive approach to interior design.
What the press is saying
PeakMetrics' news index logged 8,945 Mazda mentions in the last 30 days, 1,522 of them with Mazda in the headline. Only Rivian, at 6,042, has a lower mention count among the peers listed. Toyota's is 61,967.
The recent headlines are commercial and product-led. They cover a dealer group taking on a fourth Mazda outlet with a new showroom in York, August sales results, a piece on why Mazda keeps its old-school design tradition, and a 2026 MX-5 Miata vs. Subaru BRZ comparison. One is a listing for a replacement window lift motor for the Mazda 2.
I should focus on automakers with solid reliability records, like Toyota, Honda, Mazda, and Subaru.
The gap
The press story is about retail expansion, sales figures, design and the MX-5. The AI story is about safety, reliability and, in the Grok answer, customer-care escalation. None of the sampled answers mentioned design tradition, sales or dealer openings.
Coverage volume does not map neatly onto answer volume. Subaru has a similar news count (9,567) but was named in 264 answers, against Mazda's 158. This is one snapshot and does not show why.
What to watch
A comms team could start with the intents where Mazda appears (safety, reliability, value, resale) and the ones where it barely registers (innovation, EV charging, leadership). Both sets come from the same 250 benchmark questions.
It is also worth reading which brands sit beside Mazda in each answer, and which cited domains the assistants pull from. Grok's answer drew on Reddit threads and a ranking of telephone service calls. Live answers vary between runs, so these figures describe this snapshot and not a stable position.
