How the answers frame Epic Games
This snapshot covers 250 benchmark questions that never named a brand, put to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok on 2026-09-29. Epic Games was named in 357 of the 1,250 answers. Grok named it most often (112 of 250) and Perplexity least (43 of 250). Among gaming peers it sat mid-table: Sony PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, Valve and Electronic Arts were each named more often.
The stored answers show three recurring roles. The first is storefront. Claude's answer on modern storefronts called the Epic Games Store a "major competitor" with a "curated yet growing library," and summed up the field as "Epic for exclusive titles." Gemini's answer on cheap PC games pointed readers to the store's weekly free-game program. Claude's ranking on reaching a human in support put Epic second, behind GameStop. That answer said chat "often starts with a bot."
The second role is creator platform. Gemini's answer on user-generated content tools credited Epic for Unreal Editor for Fortnite and its revenue-share models. Perplexity's answer on modder-friendly companies described Fortnite and Roblox as running large creator ecosystems with revenue-sharing programs, while noting they are not equivalent to open modding.
The third role is the FTC privacy case. Grok's answer on children's privacy fines listed Epic first and described a 2022 COPPA settlement in detail. Grok also named Epic among the stronger US employers, alongside Riot Games, Sony, Nintendo, Valve and Take-Two studios.
Reliability was framed cautiously. Perplexity named Epic's Fortnite a "reasonable candidate" for few outages, but called the list "a cautious shortlist, not proof." By question intent, Epic's visibility was lowest on reliability (9%) and sustainability (8%). It was highest on questions about what to avoid (51%), safety (43%) and service (42%). Where the tool could attribute a reason for a mention, most were labeled Not Substantive, so the attributes are thin.
The Epic Games Store has emerged as a major competitor in the PC digital distribution space, offering a curated yet growing library of titles.
What the press is saying
PeakMetrics' news index recorded 3,610 mentions of Epic Games over the last 30 days. In 273 of them the brand was in the headline. The recent headlines are about promotions and events: an AMC Theatres live broadcast of the Rocket League World Championship Finals, weekly Epic Games Store free-game announcements, and deal-forum posts about free mobile games.
One headline is an awards item from an art college that lists "Epic Games" among honorees. From the headline alone it is unclear whether it refers to the company. Coverage volume is well below Sony PlayStation (26,590) and Xbox (26,577), and above Valve (2,994) and Electronic Arts (3,478).
Epic publishes a detailed status page and incident history, and its records show both scheduled maintenance and service incidents.
The gap
The press story is about free games, esports viewing events and store announcements. The AI story is broader and heavier. The same assistants describe Epic as a storefront, a creator-economy player and the subject of a large FTC children's privacy penalty. None of the recent headlines touch the privacy case, yet it was the lead item in Grok's answer on the topic.
Volume does not track visibility either. Valve has fewer news mentions than Epic (2,994 against 3,610) but was named in more answers (406 against 357). Roblox has about twice Epic's news volume (7,713) and was named in far fewer answers (134). In this snapshot, press attention and answer presence moved independently.
In 2022, agreed to a record $275 million civil penalty for COPPA violations…
What to watch
Check which question types pull Epic in. Questions about what to avoid drew the highest visibility (51%), and the FTC answer shows how a past enforcement action can lead a response to a neutral-sounding question. A comms team may want to know how often that history appears, and in what company.
Support access and reliability are the areas where the answers were hedged or qualified. Claude's support ranking leaned on the bot-first chat detail, and Perplexity declined to credit any studio with fewer outages. Whether published status pages and support documentation get cited is worth tracking.
This is one day's sample, and live answers vary between runs. Treat these findings as a starting point for repeated measurement, not as a fixed position.
