How the answers frame Dominion Energy
PeakMetrics measured 250 benchmark questions across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok on 2026-09-29. Dominion Energy was named in 56 of the 1,250 answers. Grok named it 20 times, Gemini 12, Perplexity 10, ChatGPT 8 and Claude 6, each out of 250. This piece draws on 8 stored answers that named the company.
Most of those answers mention Dominion in passing. Perplexity's answer on grid cybersecurity said there is no reliable public ranking of utilities by spending. It cited Virginia regulators approving money for "cyber and physical security elements of Dominion’s electric distribution-grid plan." Claude's answer on home EV charging listed Dominion Energy Solutions as a Qmerit partner and an installation provider. Grok's answers placed Dominion inside multi-company lists on dividend stocks, coal retirement and steady-income investing, next to Duke Energy, NextEra Energy and Southern Company.
In ChatGPT's answer on natural gas suppliers fined for misleading customers, the visible text named Dominion East Ohio Energy among the companies it planned to search. The suppliers it listed in the answer we can see were HEM, Palmco, SFE and Statewise.
Visibility varies by question intent. Dominion appeared most often on "avoid" questions (11%), followed by leadership (9%), employer (8%) and investment returns (8%). It did not appear on reliability or value questions (0% each). When the answers were classified by what the company was credited for, most were tagged "Not Substantive". Only single answers were tagged Reliability & Operations or Financial Performance.

What the press is saying
The PeakMetrics news index shows 5,027 mentions of Dominion Energy over the last 30 days. The brand is in the headline of 859 of them. The recent headlines fall into three groups. One is regulatory filings, including an SEC listing for Dominion Energy South Carolina. Another is outage and restoration reporting, such as a Norfolk outage affecting more than 3,500 customers and crews restoring power in Hampton Roads. The third is syndicated announcements about progress on a NextEra Energy and Dominion Energy combination.
Dominion Energy Solutions also partners with Qmerit for Level 2 charger installations…
The gap
The press coverage is about power restoration and a corporate combination. The assistants' answers in this snapshot talk about neither. They mention Dominion as a cyber-security spending example, an EV charger partner and a dividend name. Reliability, the obvious frame for outage coverage, produced no Dominion appearances on that question intent.
Coverage volume and answer presence also diverge across peers. Dominion's news count (5,027) is close to Duke Energy's (5,446) and PG&E's (5,506). Those two were named in 127 and 110 answers, against Dominion's 56. This is a single snapshot, so it shows a gap on this date and not a fixed ranking.
What to watch
A comms team would note that the assistants currently reach for Dominion as a supporting example, and the specific facts they cite come from regulatory and partner sources such as the approved cyber-security budget and the Qmerit partnership. Those are the details that travel into answers.
The outage and combination stories in the press do not show up in these answers. Whether they do in future runs is worth checking, since live answers vary between runs. The "avoid" question intent is also worth tracking, because it was where Dominion appeared most often in this snapshot. Reviewing the actual answers there would show which context the assistants place the company in.
