How the answers frame DHL
This snapshot, measured on 2026-09-28, covers 25 answers from five assistants. DHL was named in 19 of them, close to UPS and FedEx at 20 each. Gemini and Grok named DHL in all five of their answers. Perplexity named it in four, ChatGPT in three and Claude in two.
The dominant frame was international reach. On reliability, Gemini's carrier table listed DHL Express as the "International" pick, and Perplexity's per-category summary assigned DHL to international express shipping. On small businesses, ChatGPT called DHL the best fit if a business is "international-first", and Perplexity and Claude described it as the choice for international orders. Grok's reliability answer put it more narrowly, calling it another strong player for global express but less emphasized in US domestic comparisons.
The labels attached to DHL in the data lean toward operations. Reliability and Operations was the most common credit (9 mentions), followed by Sustainability and Ethics (3) and Customer Experience (1). Three mentions carried no substantive credit.
On sustainability, Perplexity listed DHL Group first among the companies it named. Gemini and Grok both described a GoGreen Plus offer, but they gave different electric-vehicle figures, so the answers do not agree on the detail. On customer service, Grok's answer cited an ACSI score of 79 for DHL, one point below FedEx and Amazon Shipping at 80. Gemini described DHL Express as highlighted for end-to-end tracking on international shipments.
The "which shipping company should customers avoid?" question was the exception. Gemini and Grok said no single company should be avoided. Grok added that DHL is criticized in some markets, citing Ireland, for delays and communication. Perplexity named DHL among the companies with the strongest negative signals in the review-site excerpts it drew on, and it said those excerpts show customer dissatisfaction rather than an objective performance ranking.
DHL, UPS, FedEx, and DB Schenker appear in lists of top global shipping companies selected for coverage, service variety, and reliability.
What the press is saying
PeakMetrics' news index shows 10,710 mentions of DHL in the last 30 days. In 1,393 of them, DHL is in the headline.
The recent headlines lean toward air freight and corporate news. They include DHL Express and Singapore Airlines extending their Boeing 777 freighter partnership, a report of rising heavyweight shipments in Asia Pacific, and a capital market information release from DHL AG. One item was a local story about flying low over a stadium in South Africa that carries the DHL name.
Among the parcel carriers in the same set of answers, DHL has the smallest news footprint. UPS has 34,392 mentions, USPS 28,258 and FedEx 21,769.
DHL is another strong player for global express but less emphasized in US domestic comparisons.
The gap
In the AI answers, DHL is a fixture next to UPS and FedEx despite far less press volume. The answers credit it with a defined job, which is international shipping, customs know-how and network reach.
The press stories do not describe that job in the same terms. The sampled headlines are about freighter aircraft, Asia Pacific volumes and investor disclosures. They contain nothing on customer service, and the sustainability material that some answers described does not appear in them.
Sustainability is where the answers say the most that the headline sample does not reflect. Several answers gave DHL specific climate targets and fleet figures, but those figures differ between assistants.
What to watch
For a DHL comms team, this snapshot suggests the assistants have settled on a narrow role for the brand. It is the default international answer and a supporting name in domestic comparisons. Domestic questions about small business, customer service and the "avoid" question are where the answers name DHL alongside others or add caveats.
The "avoid" question is worth tracking. In this snapshot only Perplexity drew on review-site excerpts and put DHL first in its list of negative signals, while Gemini and Grok declined to single out one company. That is one answer from one assistant. It shows that review-site language can enter these answers when the question invites it.
The sustainability figures are also worth checking, because the assistants gave different numbers for the same programs. This is a single snapshot and the assistants' answers vary between runs, so it is a baseline to compare against later, not a trend.
