How the answers frame Coinbase
This is a single snapshot taken on 2026-09-29: 250 benchmark questions that never named a brand, put to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok, for 1,250 answers in all. Coinbase was named in 75 of them. Grok named it most often (25 of 250) and Claude least (9 of 250). PayPal (532 answers) and Block (508) were named far more often in the same fintech set.
The stored answers that named Coinbase show it appearing as one item in a list. In ChatGPT's answer on crypto-friendly payment companies, it sat alongside PayPal and Stripe, and the answer discussed Coinbase Commerce and Coinbase Business/Payments. In Claude's answer on small-business fees, it was the cryptocurrency option. Gemini's layoffs answer listed Coinbase among payment companies, describing a May 2026 cut of about 14% of staff as reported in that answer. Perplexity's answer on CFPB complaints placed it in a 2022 top three with PayPal and Square.
Visibility varied by question type. Coinbase showed up most in employer questions (20% of them). It appeared in safety, leadership and 'avoid' questions at about 8% each and in trust questions at 7%. It did not appear at all in money-movement-speed questions and barely in value or account-protection questions (1% each). The tags for what Coinbase was credited for are thin: one each for Price & Value, Labour & Workplace, and Not Substantive.

What the press is saying
PeakMetrics' news index shows 28,217 mentions of Coinbase in the last 30 days, 3,094 of them with the brand in the headline. That is close to PayPal (28,552) and Block (28,448) and well above Stripe (7,185).
The recent headlines center on policy and markets. Two concern the Clarity Act: the CFO's backup plan if it fails in Congress, and Brian Armstrong on what killed it. Others cover a $188M bitcoin transfer to Coinbase and the company's push into mobile derivatives, equity perpetuals and crypto-backed mortgages.

The gap
The press story is about crypto regulation, executive commentary and product expansion. The AI story, in the answers sampled here, is about payments: what a merchant pays, who cut staff, who draws complaints. The Clarity Act and the derivatives and mortgage push did not appear in the stored answers that named Coinbase.
Press volume did not carry over into answer visibility in this snapshot. PayPal and Block have similar news volume and were named roughly seven times as often. Robinhood, with less than half Coinbase's coverage, appeared in a comparable number of answers (64). Volume of coverage and presence in AI answers are separate measurements.
Only four of the 75 answers were supplied for review, and the assistants' answers vary between runs. These observations describe the sample and are not a ranking.
What to watch
A comms team would note which questions bring Coinbase into the answers: fees, employer and workforce questions, and complaint-database questions. Its news presence is mostly elsewhere. The 20% employer figure and the Gemini layoffs answer suggest workforce news gets picked up in AI answers more readily than policy news does.
Check which sources sit behind these answers, since the Perplexity answer relied on a 2022 analysis and the Claude answer on fee pages. Old or narrow sources can set how the assistants describe the company. Rerun the benchmark questions across all five assistants before treating any single answer as settled.
