How the answers frame Cloudflare
This is a snapshot from 29 September 2026. It covers 250 benchmark questions that never named a brand, put to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok, for 1,250 answers in total. Cloudflare was named in 110 of them. Grok named it most often (36 of 250 answers) and Claude least (9 of 250). Several larger vendors appeared far more often, including Microsoft Security (520), CrowdStrike (442) and Palo Alto Networks (404).
In the stored answers, Cloudflare is mostly one item in a list. On zero trust, Claude described Cloudflare One as a platform that "replaces traditional VPNs with identity and context-based access to internal applications". On product reputation, Claude placed it among established leaders and credited it for DDoS protection and edge security. Perplexity, asked about cloud-native platforms that roll out quickly to remote workers, listed Cloudflare One first and pitched it as a phased start: DNS filtering first, then secure web gateway, browser isolation and data-loss prevention.
Cloudflare also shows up in questions about downsides. Gemini's layoffs answer said Cloudflare cut roughly 20% of its workforce in May 2026 as it pivoted toward the "agentic AI era". Gemini's answer on outages and breaches named Cloudflare as affected by the 2023 Okta breach and said it contained the attempts. These are the assistants' statements, and PeakMetrics has not verified them.
By question intent, visibility in this snapshot was highest on leadership (17%) and innovation (16%), followed by incident transparency and fit and deployment (13% each). It was lowest on value and service (2% each) and detection effectiveness (4%). Credit tags on the brand's mentions were mostly "Not Substantive" (5), with one "Labour & Workplace" (1).
Gained significant reputation for DDoS protection and edge security…
What the press is saying
PeakMetrics' news index recorded 9,887 Cloudflare mentions in the last 30 days, 1,420 of them with the brand in the headline. That volume is well above most of the smaller vendors in the peer set and below Cisco (22,216) and Microsoft Security (21,221).
The sampled headlines split into product news, people news and security-threat stories. Product coverage includes Cloudflare Application Profiles bringing positive security to web apps, and a Yahoo Finance piece on a bigger AI push as threats rise. On people, former Cloudflare CSO Joe Sullivan joined the Manifold Security board. On threats, one story described attackers using a fake Cloudflare CAPTCHA to lead victims to a RAT infection, and another compared DNSProxy against Cloudflare as a DDoS option. None of the sampled headlines mention the layoffs that Gemini's answer described.
Cloudflare for a phased, low-friction start; Zscaler if replacing VPN-based access is the main goal.
The gap
By news volume Cloudflare sits in the upper tier of this peer group. By appearances in unbranded answers it sits in the middle to lower part, behind several vendors with similar or smaller news counts, such as CrowdStrike, Fortinet and Check Point. Heavy press attention has not translated into being named as often in these answers.
The content differs too. The press mixes product launches, executive moves and stories where the Cloudflare name is used as bait or as a comparison point. The answers reduce this to a few roles: a zero trust access option, a DDoS and edge name, and an easy first step for remote workforces. The restructuring and Okta-related incident points came from a single assistant, Gemini, and were not part of the sampled press headlines.
In May 2026, Cloudflare announced a significant restructuring, cutting roughly 20% of its global workforce (over 1,100 employees) as it pivoted its strategy toward the "agentic AI era".
What to watch
For a comms team, the takeaway is that Cloudflare gets named mostly when the question is about architecture or deployment, and less when it is about value, service or detection effectiveness. Those weaker intents are where these answers gave it little airtime.
Watch how Gemini handles incident and workforce questions. One answer carried a specific layoffs claim, and another placed Cloudflare inside a story about a partner's breach. Single answers vary between runs, so treat this as a prompt to re-test those benchmark questions, not as a settled position.
Also check the spread across assistants. In this snapshot Grok named Cloudflare four times as often as Claude, so a single-assistant check would give a misleading picture.
