AI answers put Boeing in nearly every aerospace conversation, often as the cautionary example

This snapshot covers 250 benchmark questions asked of ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok on 2026-09-29, 1,250 answers in total. Boeing was named in 667 of them. Lockheed Martin was next at 529, then Northrop Grumman at 435, RTX at 393 and Airbus at 362. By assistant, Grok named Boeing in 181 of 250 answers and Claude in 110 of 250, the lowest of the five.

Visibility varied by the intent of the question. Boeing was named in about three-quarters of answers to leadership (76%), employer (75%) and trust (72%) questions, and in 69% of government-contract questions. It was named far less often on value (13%), service (29%) and reliability (39%). Safety came in at 46%.

In the answers we were given, Boeing is often present as part of a set. Claude's answer to which contractors are most trusted called Boeing one of the "Big 5" that control most US defense spending. Claude's list of best aerospace employers put it among the established leaders. Gemini listed it among companies for women building a career, citing rotational programs and continuous learning.

It also appears as the example in negative-leaning questions. ChatGPT's answer on shareholder lawsuits cited a litigation index in which Boeing had the most cases in aerospace and defense. Claude's export-control answer described a February 2024 settlement. Claude's fixed-price answer described a $2 billion quarterly charge across four programs. Grok's production-delay answer said Boeing had struggled most among major aircraft makers. Perplexity's trust answer said Boeing's public trust had fallen most sharply.

Not every answer was unfavorable to Boeing. Perplexity's fighter answer described Boeing's F-47 as the clearest funded and contracted next-generation fighter program in the US. In the same answer, the F/A-XX contest with Northrop Grumman was described as awaiting a decision. In ChatGPT's investor answer, the model's own working notes questioned whether to include Boeing among the strongest financially, and it was not part of the ranked group.

The strengths credited to Boeing were thin in this snapshot. Most of the small number of tagged credits were classed as not substantive. The substantive ones were Safety & Compliance (5), Financial Performance (3) and Labour & Workplace (3), with single credits for Customer Experience and Reliability & Operations.

The PeakMetrics news index shows 47,588 mentions of Boeing over the last 30 days, 6,470 of them with Boeing in the headline. Only SpaceX has more coverage among the peers listed, at 51,777. Lockheed Martin has 17,283, Airbus 23,392 and Northrop Grumman 7,170.

Recent headlines run across several storylines. They include a Navy selection of Boeing for the F/A-XX program, a NASA discussion of a Starliner deal, and a software glitch flagged on 737 MAX jets. They also include a large Korean Air purchase reported as 103 aircraft and a supplemental type certificate validation on a Boeing Business Jet 737-700. The coverage mixes new orders and awards with product issues.

The press story in this window centers on current events: a fighter award, a Starliner discussion, a MAX software flag and a major order. The AI story leans on established reference points, including past settlements, program charges, the 737 MAX crashes and trust surveys.

There is some overlap. Grok's answer mentioned a September 2026 cockpit software glitch tied to MAX 10 certification, which lines up with the recent 737 MAX headline. There is also a timing difference. Perplexity's fighter answer described the F/A-XX contract decision as imminent, while the index headline reports the Navy selecting Boeing. That is a single snapshot, but it shows an answer trailing the news.

Volume of coverage does not track visibility across the sector. SpaceX has more news than Boeing but was named in 199 answers against Boeing's 667. Honeywell has 15,608 mentions in the news index and appears in 68 answers.

First, the questions where Boeing is least visible are the ones about value, service and reliability. Those are the topics where a comms team would want a substantive account in circulation. For now the answers name Boeing there less often than on leadership, employer or trust questions.

Second, look at what Boeing is credited for when it is named. Much of the credit in this snapshot was not substantive, and the most common substantive category was Safety & Compliance. Watch whether the F/A-XX award and other program news show up as credited strengths in later runs.

Third, several answers rely on older events and old survey data. Claude's engine-service answer said its ranking data was from 2020. Perplexity's R&D ranking used 2022 figures. Treat these as single live answers that vary between runs, not as a fixed position.
