How the answers frame Best Buy
This snapshot covers 250 benchmark questions put to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok on 2026-09-29, or 1,250 answers in all. Best Buy was named in 155 of them. By provider, that was Grok 42 of 250, ChatGPT 37, Claude 28, Gemini 28 and Perplexity 20. Of the 12 stored answers reviewed, most name Best Buy as one entry in a long list of retailers, next to Walmart, Target, Costco, Home Depot and Lowe's. The questions were about curbside pickup, big-box wages, Black Friday electronics and space heaters.
Returns are where Best Buy gets specific treatment. In both the Claude and Perplexity answers to "What are the stingiest return policies among major US retailers?", Best Buy appears with a 15-day window for most products. Claude's answer also cites a $35 restocking fee on cell phones and a 15 percent fee on some appliances and DSLR cameras. The returns_and_shipping question group is the intent where Best Buy's visibility was highest after trust, at 24 percent and 27 percent respectively.
Elsewhere the framing is mixed. Claude's answer on the best-run US retailers credited Best Buy with a "successful omnichannel strategy and customer service focus." Perplexity's answer on market share put Best Buy among the retailers "losing ground." In the Claude answer on rebuilding a reputation after a scandal, Best Buy appeared only to note that it had no full-blown crisis but did pivot its strategy as e-commerce grew.
The credited-for data is thin. Seven credits were classed as not substantive and two as customer experience. Visibility by question intent was low for reliability (6 percent), product selection (5 percent), leadership (6 percent) and avoid-type questions (1 percent).

What the press is saying
The PeakMetrics news index recorded 5,591 mentions of Best Buy over the last 30 days, 851 of them with the brand in the headline. The recent headlines sampled are about a TCS deal for a Best Buy Bengaluru tech hub, member deals with free streaming, preorder discounts and free shipping, and several stock-market items, including institutional share purchases and whether the stock is outperforming the Dow.
Successful omnichannel strategy and customer service focus…
The gap
The press story is corporate and financial: a technology hub, investor activity and promotions. The AI story is operational and consumer-facing, and its sharpest details are the 15-day return window and restocking fees. None of the sampled headlines is about returns, and none of the sampled answers mentions the tech hub or the stock.
Best Buy's volume also differs from its peers. It sits sixth among the 15 sector brands in answer appearances, at 155 of 1,250, behind Walmart (577), Target (452), Costco (423), Home Depot (177) and Kroger (156). Its news count of 5,591 is well below those of Walmart (79,582), Target (42,684) and Costco (37,348). Nordstrom is close in answers at 154 with more news, and Nike has fewer appearances with far more news. Press volume and answer appearances do not track each other closely in this set.
Best Buy has struggled as shoppers seek lower prices elsewhere.
What to watch
For a comms team, the takeaway from this snapshot is that returns are the context in which the answers described Best Buy most concretely, and the details they repeated (15-day window, membership exception, restocking fees) came from third-party sources the answers drew on. Checking which sources those are, and whether the descriptions match current policy, is the practical next step.
Best Buy's low visibility on reliability, product selection and leadership questions means that in these answers other retailers carried those themes. These are single snapshots of live answers, which vary between runs, so they should be read as a baseline to compare against later runs, not as a ranking.
