How the answers frame AT&T
This snapshot, taken on 2026-09-28, covers 25 answers from five assistants (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok) to category questions that never named a brand. AT&T was named in four of them. Claude, Gemini, Grok and ChatGPT each named it once. Perplexity did not name it. Three of the four came from the question "Which telecom providers have the best customer service?" The fourth came from "Which telecom company should customers avoid?"
In all four, AT&T was named next to Verizon, and T-Mobile was the reference point. Claude's answer put T-Mobile first among internet providers on customer satisfaction, AT&T second and Verizon third. Gemini grouped Verizon and AT&T together as carriers that "frequently receive lower satisfaction ratings." Grok said the two "trail T-Mobile in these rankings" but perform adequately on network reliability, and separately mentioned AT&T Fiber among fiber providers scoring well in ACSI broadband data.
The one answer that singled AT&T out was ChatGPT's reply to the "avoid" question. It said AT&T was the carrier customers are most often advised to be cautious about, citing a summary of J.D. Power reporting on network quality. It then added that no single carrier is right for everyone and that location matters. In every answer, the lead recommendations went to T-Mobile or to smaller providers such as Mint Mobile and Consumer Cellular.
…recent J.D. Power reporting was summarized as AT&T ranking worst for network quality across U.S. regions…
What the press is saying
PeakMetrics' news index shows 6,796 mentions of AT&T over the last 30 days, 1,465 with the brand in the headline. That is the lowest total among the six Telecom & Media brands in this comparison. Disney has 93,991, Netflix 134,987 and Verizon 23,125.
The recent headlines do not centre on customer service. They cover an FCC move to open spectrum for satellite broadband, with AT&T, T-Mobile and SpaceX named together. They also include investor commentary on growth from acquisitions, a bullish-versus-bearish investor piece, and a sports event at AT&T Stadium. One headline is a T-Mobile phone offer that mentions AT&T.
…they frequently receive lower satisfaction ratings in independent surveys due to issues like complex billing, long wait times, or difficulty in resolving problems.
The gap
The press story is about spectrum policy, financial performance and sponsorship-style appearances. The AI story in this snapshot is about satisfaction rankings, where AT&T is a benchmark for what T-Mobile beats. The assistants drew on survey material such as J.D. Power and ACSI, and none of the recent headlines in the index touches that material.
Volume also runs the other way. AT&T's news coverage is small next to some peers, yet it was named in more answers than Comcast, Netflix or Warner Bros. Discovery in this sample. The AI mentions are tied to one narrow question type, and it was that type that produced the caution framing.
What to watch
For an AT&T comms team, the takeaway from this snapshot is that customer-service and "which to avoid" questions are where the assistants placed the brand. They placed it in relation to T-Mobile, and they cited third-party survey pages. Cited domains in these answers included jdpower.com, theacsi.com and consumer-finance and tech outlets. The question is what those sources say and how they are summarised.
These are single runs from a small sample, and live answers vary between runs. Repeat the same benchmark questions before treating any of this as stable. Watch whether AT&T's fiber and broadband results, which Grok noted, appear more often than the wireless comparison.
