Aflac · Insurance

In AI answers about insurance, Aflac shows up mainly as a data-breach case and a diversity example

Across category questions that never named a brand, the assistants rarely reached for Aflac, and when they did it was for a ransomware breach, board diversity or entry-level sales pay. Press coverage in the same period centers on ad campaigns and cancer awareness, which these answers did not mention.

The evidence

One snapshot, measured September 29, 2026. These figures come from one quarterly run of 1,250 answers (95% range 1–3%), not a ranking or a trend. The questions never named Aflac.

How the answers frame Aflac

This snapshot, measured on 2026-09-29, put 250 brand-free questions to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok, 1,250 answers in all. Aflac was named in 24 of them. By provider: ChatGPT 0 of 250, Claude 6, Gemini 4, Perplexity 3 and Grok 11. Larger carriers such as State Farm (483 of 1,250) and Allstate (367) were named far more often. Among the 15 insurers in the peer set, only American Family Insurance was named less often than Aflac.

Where Aflac appeared, the context varied. Claude's answer to a question about ransomware attacks on major health insurers listed Aflac third, saying it "experienced a data breach reported to OCR on August 8, 2025, affecting 13,924,906 individuals." That framing is a security incident, and it sits beside UnitedHealth's Change Healthcare and Blue Shield of California.

Perplexity's answer on diverse leadership and boards gave Aflac the most favorable treatment among the answers supplied. It said Aflac has "the clearest cited evidence of combined gender and racial diversity on its board and in U.S. leadership," while noting the figures are not fully comparable across companies. Grok, asked which insurers pay entry-level employees the most, grouped Aflac with HealthMarkets and Progressive and said it "frequently appears among higher payers" in sales and agent roles.

The credited themes are thin: Safety & Compliance, Sustainability & Ethics, and Labour & Workplace, one mention each. Visibility by question intent was highest on safety (9%) and sustainability (7%). It was 0% on reliability, value, service, innovation, claims experience, coverage options and financial strength, which are the questions a buyer or policyholder is most likely to ask.

What the press is saying

The PeakMetrics news index recorded 3,241 mentions of Aflac over the past 30 days, 1,055 of them with the brand in the headline. The recent headlines center on marketing and community programs. They include a campaign with Ben Affleck, a report of him spray-painting his name on an Aflac billboard in Los Angeles, and a cancer-screening tie-in with Rachel Zoe. Others cover the company's observance of National Childhood Cancer and Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Month and an investor-style head-to-head survey listing.

That coverage volume is not small. Aflac's 3,241 mentions are more than Liberty Mutual (1,906), GEICO (1,952) or USAA (1,498) in the same index, and all three of those were named in far more AI answers.

The gap

The press story is advertising, celebrity tie-ins and cancer awareness. The AI story, in the answers supplied, is a breach disclosure, a board-diversity data point and a sales-pay mention. None of the supplied answers touched the campaign or the awareness work that dominates recent headlines.

Coverage volume also did not translate into visibility. Aflac has heavy news activity and low presence in brand-free category answers. Peers with much less coverage, such as Erie Insurance (520 mentions) and Farmers Insurance (779), were named in 180 and 171 answers respectively. In these answers, press attention and AI visibility look like separate measures.

What to watch

For a comms team, the first read from this snapshot is that the largest single appearance type is a negative-context one: the breach listing in Claude's answer. It is one answer in a live, variable set, so it is a flag rather than a pattern. It is worth checking how often breach questions surface Aflac across repeated runs.

The second is the empty core. Questions on reliability, claims experience, coverage options and financial strength produced no Aflac appearances in this snapshot. Those are the topics where the assistants are describing the category to prospective customers.

The third is what the assistants draw on. Perplexity's diversity answer rested on Aflac's own reported figures, and Grok cited job-salary aggregators. Which domains carry Aflac's story is worth mapping before deciding where to publish. These are single-run answers from 2026-09-29 and should be re-measured before anything is treated as settled.

How this was measured

Measured September 29, 2026. 250 unbranded questions per sector, asked to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok on their product models, with web search on. Refreshed quarterly.

This is a snapshot, not a ranking or a trend: AI answers vary from run to run. It shows whether a brand appeared and which sources were cited, not how favorably it was described. The paid platform tracks favorability daily.

Full method

In an early five-question test, the same brand went from 40% to 30% to 70% visibility across three runs, which is why every figure here is dated and treated as a snapshot.

The questions cover 13 intents, such as reliability, value for money and customer service. A model drafted them, a review pass removed paraphrases and questions that point to one company, and every question was checked so that none names a measured brand. Each was asked once per assistant in run 2026Q4.

Every visibility figure comes with a 95% range (a Wilson interval). Where two brands' ranges overlap, treat them as tied. The figures use all 1,250 answers. The quotes in the story come from a stratified sample of 60 of them, spread across every assistant and intent.

Summarized on September 30, 2026from this snapshot's stored answers. Every quote is checked against the original answer.
