Zero-click search

A zero-click search is a search after which the user does not click through to any website, because the results page or an AI-generated answer already gave them what they wanted.

What it describes

The user searches, reads the answer on the page and leaves or searches again. Answer boxes, featured snippets, knowledge panels, weather and sports cards, and now AI Overviews can all satisfy a query without a visit. Chat assistants extend this: the answer is the product, and a link is optional. The term was popularized by search marketers, notably Rand Fishkin, who has published estimates of how often searches end without a click.

Such estimates come from clickstream panels or analytics, differ by method, country and device, and are not official Google figures. Quote a specific percentage only with its source, date and method.

Example

A hypothetical example: someone searches for whether a company has been fined. The summary at the top gives a two-sentence answer from a news report, and the person closes the tab. The company's own statement was never seen, and its web analytics show no visit.

Why it matters to communications and risk teams

If many readers stop at the answer, traffic to an organization's site understates how often it is described. The answer is the exposure, so the measurement should be of what the answers say and which sources they use. See AI search, AI visibility and answer engine optimization. The free AI Perceptions check samples answers from chat assistants; it does not measure Google results pages.

Common misconceptions

A zero-click search still has value, because the reader saw the brand or the claim. The share of such searches varies by query type, so clicks have not vanished.

Snippets and panels produced zero-click results long before generated answers existed.
