Emotional video messages shared by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli after India’s defeat in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Finals

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerns two social-media videos presented as emotional messages from Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli after India lost the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup final. The review examined the videos separately and found that neither matched that setting: the Rohit clip came from an earlier conversation, while Kohli’s clip addressed a different team and competition. For Rohit’s video, the review says a reverse-image search of screenshots led to the same visuals in a Sportskeeda Cricket YouTube video. It identifies that source as Rohit’s Instagram conversation with Suresh Raina in March 2020, and reports that the same statements shown in the circulating clip appear at 7:43 in the longer video. This places the clip more than three years before the 2023 final and identifies its original context as a conversation with Raina, not a post-final message. For Kohli’s video, the review reports finding the same clip on Kohli’s X account. The post’s accompanying words refer to learning from the season and bouncing back next season; the review identifies it as an apology to fans for Royal Challengers Bangalore’s performance in the 2018 IPL. The two clips therefore have distinct, earlier contexts and do not support the claim that Sharma and Kohli shared them after India’s 2023 final defeat.

Publisher’s rating: False

The claim concerns a video of former Pakistani cricketers, including Wasim Akram, dancing during a television programme. It was shared as showing them celebrating India’s defeat in the 2023 ODI World Cup final. The review says it used InVID-WeVerify to investigate the footage and locate the original video: “Invid- We Verify තාක්ෂනය ඔස්සේ අප විසින් සිදු කරන ලද කරුණු විමසා බැලීමේදී අපට මෙහි මුල් වීඩියෝව සොයා ගැනීමට හැකිවුණා.” The original footage, the review explains, was not from the India–Australia final. It was from late 2022, when Pakistan qualified for the T20 World Cup final after defeating New Zealand. The former players were watching the match live from a studio and celebrated that qualification by dancing: “එහිදී අපට දක්නට ලැබුණේ මෙම වීඩියෝව පසුගියදා අවසන්වූ ඉන්දීය – ඕස්ට්‍රේලියා එක් දින ජාත්‍යන්තර ක්‍රිකට් ලෝක කුසලාන අවසන් තරගය හා සම්බන්ධ එකක් නොව, 2022 වසරේ අගභාගයේ පැවති 20-20 ලෝක කුසලානය හා සම්බන්ධ එකක් බවයි.” The review identifies the programme as The Pavilion Cricket Show and says a video of the moment was circulated in November 2022. It also distinguishes this footage from the programme’s later coverage of the India–Australia final: the review says that analysis did not show the dance seen in the viral clip. Thus, the footage shows a celebration of Pakistan’s qualification for a different tournament’s final, not a reaction to India’s loss in the 2023 final.

Video showing Prime Minister Narendra Modi ignoring Pat Cummins during the ICC World Cup 2023 trophy presentation ceremony

Publisher’s rating: MISLEADING

The claim concerns a clip presented as showing Prime Minister Narendra Modi ignoring Australian captain Pat Cummins during the World Cup trophy presentation, following Australia’s victory over India on 19 November 2023. The review says the clip was taken as Modi left the stage, rather than showing the full interaction between the two during the presentation. To check what happened, the review examined replay and highlights footage of the ceremony published on Hotstar. It reports that Modi and Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles handed the trophy to Cummins, and that Modi shook his hand and congratulated him. The review also cites photographs from the ceremony showing Modi congratulating Cummins. The review distinguishes this handshake from what happened afterward: Modi and Marles came down from the stage and greeted other Australian players, while Cummins was left standing with the trophy for some moments awaiting his teammates. The clip shared in the post was recorded as Modi left the stage, omitting the earlier handshake and congratulations. Thus, the clip did not show the full interaction needed to support the claim that Modi ignored Cummins.
