The review says it first checked major international media coverage for video of the event but did not find the pictured scene there. It then submitted the image to a reverse-image search. The review reports that this search traced the photograph to September 2014, when Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) staff celebrated the successful entry of the Mars Orbiter Mission spacecraft into Mars orbit—not to a Chandrayaan-3 event. The review says BBC reported on the photograph on 25 September 2014, and mentions other international reports from that period carrying the same image. Its conclusion is that the image’s attribution to Chandrayaan-3 engineers celebrating that mission’s success is misleading: the photograph shows staff celebrating India’s Mars mission instead. That correction applies to the photograph’s event and provenance, not to the broader claim that women contributed to Chandrayaan-3. The review separately reports that more than 100 women scientists and engineers were involved in the mission and that women were seen in control-room coverage during launch and landing. It also notes that the photograph being misattributed does not mean women scientists were never shown wearing saris in connection with Chandrayaan-3; the review points to footage of the mission and to a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as examples.
