Amarnath Yatra was suspended on August 5 in J&K

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The review investigates whether the Amarnath Yatra was suspended on August 5, 2023, in Jammu and Kashmir on the fourth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370. It reports that a government-linked Counter Disinformation Centre said the claim that the pilgrimage was suspended was false, but also notes that news reports described a suspension. The review’s conclusion is that the Yatra was suspended that day, so the Centre’s denial did not match the evidence the review presents. [S1: “News media organizations on August 5, reported that the authorities suspended Amarnath Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir in view of 4th anniversary of abrogation of Article 370.”]

Video of Muslims decorating a train travelling from Telangana’s Hyderabad to West Bengal

Publisher’s rating: MISLEADING

The claim concerns a video said to show Muslims decorating a train travelling from Hyderabad, Telangana, to West Bengal. FACTLY’s investigation identifies the train in the video as a special service for pilgrims, not a regular train travelling to West Bengal. The review says the service ran between Hyderabad and Wadi junction for people attending the 46th Anniversary Celebrations of Urs-e-Shareef at Halkatta Shareef Dargah in Karnataka’s Kalaburagi district on 1 August 2023. It concludes that the video does not show a train travelling between Hyderabad and West Bengal. To trace the footage, FACTLY reports conducting reverse image searches on screenshots from the video. It found a YouTube video published in October 2017 with similar visuals and a description identifying a train allocated to pilgrims travelling to Halkatta Shareef Dargah. The review also found a video published on 2 August 2023 showing the same train and describing it as part of the 2023 anniversary celebrations. These findings link the footage to the dargah pilgrimage rather than to the route asserted in the claim. The review adds that South Central Railway allocated four special trains between Hyderabad and Wadi junction to manage the expected rush of pilgrims attending the event. The relevant context is therefore that the footage shows pilgrims decorating a special event train; it does not establish that they were decorating a regular Hyderabad-to-West Bengal train.
