Projeto ComprovaPolitics & government

Publisher’s rating: Falso

The claim concerns a video presented as footage of an independence rally at Cibeles in Madrid on 17 or 18 October 2019, following the Supreme Court’s procés judgment. The investigation says the footage did show a crowd supporting Catalan independence outside Madrid’s City Hall, but found that the gathering had taken place in March, not after the October judgment. The review describes the video as showing esteladas beside a stage with music and a sign reading “la autodeterminación no es delito.” To check when the footage originated, the investigation used InVid to break the video into frames and conduct reverse-image searches. It says those searches located, among other results, a March 2019 tweet by Quim Torra sharing a video from the Assemblea Nacional Catalana’s account. The review therefore distinguishes the real Madrid demonstration shown in the video from the later event the post claimed it depicted. The review also gives the relevant chronology: the demonstration was against the start of the trial of Catalan independence leaders, while the Supreme Court issued its judgment on 14 October 2019. The video’s March provenance, rather than its resemblance to a post-judgment rally, is the decisive evidence against the claimed timing.

Indira Gandhi offered nuclear technology to Pakistan.

Publisher’s rating: MISLEADING

FACTLY examined a post claiming that, after India’s 1974 Pokhran nuclear tests, Indira Gandhi offered nuclear technology to Pakistan. Its review says Gandhi did make an offer to share technology, but the offer was conditional and was not directed at Pakistan alone: she described sharing it with Pakistan “in the same way” as with other countries, provided conditions for understanding and trust were created. This distinction is central to the review’s conclusion. To check the claim, FACTLY reports searching WikiLeaks for “Indira Pakistan Nuclear” and finding both Gandhi’s letter to Pakistan’s prime minister, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, and her parliamentary statement about the nuclear explosion. The review quotes her account in Parliament: she had explained the experiment’s peaceful nature and economic purposes to Bhutto, and said India was willing to share its nuclear technology with Pakistan on the same terms as with other countries, subject to the stated conditions. The review also cites Gandhi’s statement that India’s Atomic Energy Commission was studying the experiment’s results and planned to publish papers for the scientific community, as well as her interview with Danish TV, in which she said India would share the experiment’s results with Pakistani scientists and others. The evidence therefore supports a qualified offer to share technology, alongside a broader intention to share test results; it does not support presenting Pakistan as the sole or specific focus of the offer.

Pedro Sánchez ha escrito que en Lleida se sentía como si estuviera en su propio país

Publisher’s rating: Falso

The claim concerns a supposed tweet in which Pedro Sánchez thanked people in Lleida for making him feel “as if I were in my own country.” Newtral says that message was not posted by Sánchez’s official account: it was shared by a parody account impersonating him. The review distinguishes the circulating message from Sánchez’s actual post about his visit to the city. The review reports that Sánchez’s official account, @sanchezcastejon, posted about the visit on April 18, 2019. That post thanked people who had come to accompany him, including local party colleagues and officials, and described them as “excellent hosts.” It did not contain the disputed wording about feeling in his own country. A parody account, @sanchezcasrejon, posted a different message about an hour later on the same day. That version thanked “all Catalan men and women” and included the disputed phrase. The review therefore identifies the central issue as the attribution: the phrase appeared in a post from the parody account, not in the official post by Pedro Sánchez.

Imagen de Pablo Casado con una bandera franquista subido a un coche

Publisher’s rating: Falso

The claim concerns a circulating image said to show PP leader Pablo Casado on a car displaying a Franco-era flag. Newtral reports that the image spread alongside protests against the verdict in the Catalonia independence trial and labels the image a montage, not an authentic photograph. The message accompanying it alleged that the image should lead to Casado being charged with the same offenses as Jordi Cuixart and Jordi Sánchez. The fact-check identifies an earlier version of the scene: a photograph shared on Twitter by Ignacio Cosidó, then a senator, on June 24, 2018. Newtral says the original showed a constitutional flag, rather than the Franco-era flag in the circulating version. It also places Casado at that time in the campaign for his party’s leadership, following Mariano Rajoy’s resignation. This supports the finding that the disputed flag was added to an existing photograph, rather than showing the scene as claimed.
