Image of ABVP men in Assam protesting against CAA and NRC by holding a flexi with the text ‘We don’t support NRC and CAA’.
Publisher’s rating: FALSE
The claim concerns an image said to show ABVP members in Assam protesting the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC), holding a flexi that reads “We don’t support NRC and CAA.” FACTLY reports that the image was altered: the people shown were Ahmedabad ABVP members, and the original flexi supported the CAA rather than opposing it. The image therefore does not establish the claimed Assam protest or message. FACTLY describes using a Google reverse image search to investigate the circulated image. That search led to an Ahmedabad Mirror article containing a similar image. The review says the banner in that image read “We support CAA” and that the article identified the gathering as Ahmedabad ABVP members at Sabarmati Ashram supporting the CAA. This comparison of the circulated version with the similar image and its accompanying report supports the review’s conclusion that the claim misrepresented the image.

Publisher’s rating: Falso
The image was presented as showing Angela Merkel, Theresa May and Gina Haspel together as young women. Newtral says that identification is false: the young woman on the left is Merkel, but the other two are described as her friends and classmates, not May and Haspel. It also rejects an alternative identification of one of them as Dalia Grybauskaite. The review traces the photograph to a New Year’s Eve party in Berlin in 1972. It reports that the Swiss Telegraphic Agency’s image database attributes the photos to Bernd Birnbaum, a classmate of Merkel, and identifies the other people pictured as classmates from Merkel’s school in Templin. Newtral also notes that a wider photograph shows the same three girls in the same clothes. For the May identification, the review points to a photograph of May from May 1971 found by Snopes in a BBC article. Newtral says that image shows the young woman in the viral photograph is not May. The review’s conclusion is therefore about the identities assigned to the people in this specific party photograph—not whether Merkel appears in it: it says she does, while the two other identifications are false.

The claim concerns a viral quote image attributed to veteran media figure Li Yanqiu, which presented her as saying that Tsai Ing-wen was the choice for Taiwan’s stability and progress. The Taiwan FactCheck Center examined whether Li had made that endorsement and whether the image accurately represented her writing. It reported that Li had publicly denied writing an endorsement of Tsai, and concluded that the image distorted the meaning of her original post. The review says it searched Li’s Facebook page, “李艷秋的新聞夜總會,” and found a video posted on November 26 in which she addressed the circulating image. In the transcript quoted by the review, Li said she had never written the purported statement supporting Tsai’s reelection and that her article had been cut and rearranged to create a message she had not written. The review also traced the image’s wording to a November 21 post on the same page. In that post, Li’s phrasing compared what was uncertain about a Han Kuo-yu presidency with what she said could be known about Tsai continuing as president, and proposed giving Taiwan a possibility because “it couldn’t be worse than now.” The viral image changed that wording and added that Tsai was the choice for stability and progress. The review therefore treated the image as a distortion of Li’s post, not as an authentic endorsement.

Publisher’s rating: Falso
The claim concerns a photograph of people demonstrating around a guillotine in France. The review says the image was shared with a message portraying the scene as a way for French people to remind politicians that they are representatives, not masters. It concludes that the photograph had been altered and that the demonstrators were not part of the Yellow Vest movement. The review identifies the scene as a protest by the artists’ union Fédération CGT du Spectacle, held in early January 2018 at Place du Palais Royal in Paris over cultural-policy budget cuts under Emmanuel Macron’s government. It reports that the union’s secretary general, Denis Gravouil, confirmed to AFP Factual that both the ribbons around the guillotine and the demonstrators’ vests were red, not yellow. That evidence directly contradicts the claim that the photograph shows Yellow Vests. The chronology also rules out the claimed association: the review says the Yellow Vest movement began in late October 2018, months after the protest shown. It describes the movement’s trigger as the announced fuel-price increase scheduled for 1 January 2019. The photograph was therefore not an image of that later movement, even though an altered version changed the colors to suggest otherwise.
