The claim attached footage of a protest outside Taiwan’s Presidential Office to the May 20, 2020 inauguration, saying that people had gathered there to demand that the president step down. The Taiwan FactCheck Center examined whether the protest shown in the circulated video took place on that date. It concluded that the footage was not from a recent event: it showed a protest on December 26, 2016. The review identifies the people in the footage as the Next Generation Happiness Alliance, which marched from the Legislative Yuan to the area in front of the Presidential Office to protest the initial passage of amendments to parts of the Civil Code. Thus, the footage showed a real protest, but its date and context did not support presenting it as a crowd gathering on the 2020 inauguration day.
The Facebook share image implies that Donald Trump received the Ellis Island Award for services to Black young people in the United States. The review says the claim circulated chiefly as share images, including an English-language version. It notes that a photograph showing Trump alongside civil rights activist Rosa Parks and boxer Muhammad Ali was used to make the claim appear credible. The investigation distinguishes the fact that Trump received the award from the reason he received it. It reports that the Ellis Island Honors Society’s archive confirms he was an award recipient in 1986. A society spokesperson told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur that the three people shown in the photograph received the award for different reasons and were together in the image by coincidence. According to the spokesperson, Trump was recognized for his contribution as a real-estate developer to New York’s urban development, as well as for his German heritage—not for work benefiting Black young people. The review gives the renovation of an ice rink in Central Park as an example of his contribution. Thus, the documented award and photograph do not substantiate the share image’s claim about the reason for the award.
Congress party members posing as migrant workers came in a luxury car to meet Rahul Gandhi
Publisher’s rating: FALSE
The claim concerned a collage shared online alleging that migrants pictured with Rahul Gandhi were Congress members who had arrived in a luxury car for a photo opportunity. FACTLY examined the woman’s photograph in relation to Gandhi’s May 16, 2020 interaction with migrant labourers walking through Delhi. The review says the picture of her in the car was taken after the interaction, as she was being sent home—not as she arrived to meet Gandhi. (S1: “The photo of the woman in the post was taken after Rahul Gandhi met the migrants.”)

Video of BJP MLA Anil Upadhyay shooting an effigy of Mahatma Gandhi
Publisher’s rating: FALSE
The claim concerns a video said to show BJP MLA Anil Upadhyay shooting an effigy of Mahatma Gandhi. FACTLY reports that the person shown firing at the effigy was Pooja Shakun, identified as the Hindu Mahasabha’s national secretary—not Anil Upadhyay. The review also says there is no BJP MLA by that name. To identify the person in the video, the review says a reverse image search found the same video uploaded by Times of India. FACTLY describes the accompanying news video as identifying the woman shooting the effigy as Pooja Shakun. It further reports that she was later arrested by Uttar Pradesh Police for her actions. The review checked the name “Anil Upadhyay” on the My Neta website and found no BJP MLA with that name. It notes two people with similar names, but identifies one as a BSP leader in Rajasthan and the other as an independent candidate from Uttar Pradesh. Those details do not support the post’s attribution of the video to a BJP legislator.

Publisher’s rating: Falso
The claim concerns remarks Felipe González made at a Europa Press breakfast event on 15 November 2018. Newtral says some websites interpreted them as meaning he preferred Franco to Podemos, but the review identifies the subject of his comparison as the Spanish monarchy and the alternative admired by members of Podemos—not Franco. In the discussion, González criticized a Podemos-led request for King Juan Carlos I to explain his institutional activity and possible involvement in corruption cases, and described what he saw as an effort to destabilize the Crown. The review quotes him saying he preferred “the Head of State we have” over “the one they admire.” (The original review’s quoted remarks include the specific comparison.)

Publisher’s rating: Falso
The image was shared as if it showed a demonstration against the Spanish government on Madrid’s Núñez de Balboa street. Newtral reports that the photo was not taken there: it dates from 2008 and was taken in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The article identifies the location as Plaza de Mayo, rather than the Madrid protest described in the posts. To trace the image, the review says it used a TinEye reverse-image search, which found the image circulating online by 2008. It also located the photo in a 2008 Página 12 article and in other blog posts from that year. The review notes that Página 12 did not specify who took the photo or where, so it relied on a visible landmark to establish the location. That landmark is the Pyramid of May, which the article identifies as being in Plaza de Mayo, Buenos Aires. The review also points to a 2012 El País blog post about Argentina that places the caceroladas in the context of protests, including those in 2008 against the government’s Resolution 125. This provenance contradicts the claim that the photo depicts the Madrid demonstration.
