Publisher’s rating: FALSE

Publisher’s rating: MISLEADING
The investigation examined three social-media claims targeting the National People’s Power (NPP) and its main allied party, the JVP. One attributed to Niroopa Serasinghe, an NPP Colombo District candidate, the statement that she was not very religious and felt ashamed to go to temples. Another presented Nalin Hewage, an NPP Galle District candidate, as saying Prabhakaran had never been proved a terrorist. A third altered an image of a Ravaya newspaper headline to suggest that the JVP had secretly sold 40 tonnes of stolen gold. For the Serasinghe claim, the review compared the viral video with her account of the conversation and the longer exchange described in the article. It says the clip came partly from a separate video and partly from a private Zoom discussion, whose full original was not online. In the Zoom excerpt, Serasinghe was discussing whether nuns and church sisters could be involved in her campaign. The review reports that she said she was not strongly religious and then said she felt “a little embarrassed” in the context of campaigning and going to a temple. It concludes that editing removed the rest of her answer, making it appear she was ashamed to visit temples generally. The review also checked Hewage’s official Facebook page and describes his statement as a hypothetical comparison, not an endorsement of the viral wording: he argued that someone claiming the Rajapaksas were not thieves could likewise argue that Prabhakaran was not a terrorist, since neither had been proved in court, while adding that the whole country knew otherwise. For the gold claim, the review used reverse-image search and image comparison. It identified the underlying newspaper image as a 2015 Ravaya headline about 40 tonnes of gold allegedly sold with the knowledge of Mahinda and Ajith Nivard Cabraal; it reports that image analysis showed the headline had been altered to attribute the gold theft to the JVP.

BJP Spokesperson Sambit Patra tweeted comparing Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Ertugrul
Publisher’s rating: FALSE
The claim concerns a screenshot of a tweet attributed to BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra that praises Narendra Modi’s leadership by comparing it with Ertugrul’s. FACTLY says it checked whether the tweet appeared on Patra’s official Twitter account. Its described searches did not find a relevant tweet, and it reports that the screenshot differed from an actual Patra tweet in several interface details. On that basis, the review concludes the screenshot was fabricated rather than evidence that Patra made the comparison.

The claim concerns social-media posts attributing a sentence about people protesting coronavirus measures to Germany’s then justice minister, Christine Lambrecht, and naming the dts news agency as its source. The review examined both that attribution and the online article said to underlie it. Its account distinguishes the sentence’s appearance in an article from the claim that Lambrecht said it: the article described the wording as “translated and somewhat shortened,” rather than as a verbatim quotation from her. The review reports that a Google search for the alleged quotation returned only one result, with the search checked as of 14 July 2020. That result was an article on Journalistenwatch. The review says the article itself did not present the sentence as Lambrecht’s exact words; although it included the phrase “More hate and incitement is hardly possible,” it also disclosed that it contained material from dts. That disclosure does not establish that dts distributed the alleged quotation. The attribution to dts was checked separately: the review says its editor-in-chief, Michael Höfele, told the German Press Agency that dts had not published the quotation. It contrasts the allegation with a dts report from 15 May 2020 quoting Lambrecht as warning that denying or distorting facts during the pandemic could endanger lives. The review also cites a separate interview in which Lambrecht urged people considering demonstrations against coronavirus restrictions to think about the company they would be keeping. These documented remarks provide context, but are not evidence that she made the alleged statement. Finally, the review reports that Lambrecht had herself called the quotation a fake on Facebook and said she would pursue legal action. Taken together, the account identifies the online article as the place where the wording appeared, while distinguishing it from both a verified quotation by Lambrecht and a statement published by dts.
අනුර කුමාර දිසානායක අලලා සැකසුණු සාවද්ය සහ නොමඟ යවන සුළු සටහන් පෙළක් | Series of Fake claims attributed to NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake
Publisher’s rating: FALSE
The review investigated a set of Facebook posts attributing statements to Anura Kumara Dissanayake, then a National People’s Power leader and Colombo District parliamentary candidate. One post presented a short clip from an Ada Derana 360 programme with the caption that the debt crisis could be overcome by taking more loans. Other posts used a Hiru television image to attribute comments about former Sri Lankan cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan to Dissanayake. To check the debt claim, the investigators examined the Ada Derana Facebook page and the nearly 90-minute programme. They report that the discussion about repaying 14 trillion in debt occurred at about 1 hour 4 minutes. In the full discussion, Dissanayake described borrowing as not inherently a crime, said the country’s problem was that loans had not produced corresponding productive assets, and advocated concessionary rather than commercial borrowing to create assets and income for repaying debt. The review concludes that the short clip and its caption stripped away this explanation and gave a misleading impression of his position. For the Muralitharan posts, the review compared the shared images with a frame from Hiru’s Salakuna programme, identifying them as images from the same broadcast. It identifies that programme as a July 13, 2020 discussion with Dissanayake and three journalists. The investigators report that they found no discussion of Muralitharan anywhere in the programme. The review therefore concludes that the attributed Muralitharan remarks were not made in that broadcast, and that the Facebook posts were false or misleading.
Photo of Congress rebel leader Sachin Pilot joining BJP
Publisher’s rating: FALSE
The claim concerned a photo circulated as showing Congress leader Sachin Pilot joining the BJP alongside its president, JP Nadda. FACTLY’s review says that, at the time, Pilot had rebelled against the Congress in Rajasthan, but had told the media he did not plan to join the BJP. The review therefore distinguishes his actual party dispute from the separate claim made by the image: “It is true that Rajasthan Congress Leader Sachin Pilot rebelled against his own party. But he told media that he is not going to join the BJP.” To check the image, the review reports conducting a reverse image search. It traced the picture to an earlier photograph of Jyotiraditya Scindia with JP Nadda, taken when Scindia joined the BJP in March 2020. FACTLY says the circulated version had been altered by replacing Scindia’s face with Pilot’s: “On reverse image search, it is found that the photo is an edited version of Jyotiraditya Scindia’s photo of joining BJP. The original photo was captured when Scindia joined the BJP in the presence of JP Nadda in March 2020. This is photoshopped with Sachin Pilot’s face.” The review also notes that Pilot had been removed from his Rajasthan deputy chief minister and state party president positions after his revolt, but says there was no official statement from him about leaving Congress and that he had told the media he had no plans to join the BJP. Those details provide context for why the image’s claim could seem plausible, while the image comparison and Pilot’s reported comments address the claim itself: “There is no official statement from Sachin Pilot about leaving the Congress Party as of now. But, he informed media that he has no plans of joining the BJP.”
