The claim concerns a purported statement by Sebastian Kurz after the 2019 Ibiza-video scandal: that someone cannot serve as a republic’s vice-chancellor and interior minister while an investigation is being conducted into them. The review says social-media posts used the alleged words to suggest Kurz was applying a double standard. It reports that a spokesperson for Kurz told dpa the statement had not been made. The review checks the statement against Kurz’s public remarks following the video’s release and his later comments about Herbert Kickl. Kurz gave a statement on May 18, 2019, and spoke after meeting President Alexander Van der Bellen on May 19; the review says the alleged sentence appears in neither. It also says the words were absent from Kurz’s subsequent media appearances, including his announcement that he would propose Kickl’s dismissal as interior minister. The review describes Kurz’s stated reasons for seeking Kickl’s dismissal as concerns about Kickl’s role in the party when the Ibiza video was made, his awareness of the affair’s seriousness, and the appearance that he might influence its investigation. Kurz’s reported formulation was that Kickl could not investigate himself—not the broader claimed rule that a person cannot hold office whenever an investigation concerns them. The review also reports that searches of the APA database and Google found no results for the alleged quotation or related terms. It therefore finds no evidence that Kurz said the circulating sentence.

Claim: MK Stalin not inaugurated a mortuary
Publisher’s rating: Fact Crescendo Rating: False
Fact Crescendo investigated a social-media post claiming that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had inaugurated a mortuary. The post combined an image from the film *Tamizh Padam* showing the opening of a fictional “Siva mortuary” with an image of Stalin, and its accompanying text described the supposed event as a first for a chief minister. The review says the Facebook post was shared on May 22, 2021. The investigation describes searching the image in reverse and, after finding no suitable results, searching using terms related to Stalin, COVID-19 beds and an opening ceremony. Those searches led to reports that Stalin had opened a COVID-19 treatment centre in Salem with 500 oxygen-bed places. The review also says it searched YouTube for video of the event; although it did not find complete footage in reports and videos from major outlets, it found a video on the Karur boomi channel showing Stalin opening and touring the centre. The review concludes that the circulated image misrepresented the opening of a 500-bed COVID-19 treatment centre in Salem as the inauguration of a mortuary. Its account identifies the mortuary scene as a film image, not footage of Stalin opening such a facility.
UPA government initiated the project of new Parliament building with a cost of Rs. 3000 crores back in 2012
Publisher’s rating: MISLEADING
The claim combines two things: approval during the UPA period for a proposal to construct a new Parliament building, and an asserted Rs. 3,000-crore cost for that project. FACTLY’s investigation distinguishes the approval from the claim about cost. It reports that in July 2012, former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar approved a proposal for a new building, prompted by increased numbers of parliamentary staff, security personnel and visitors, and expanded parliamentary activity. Her approval supports the proposal’s existence, but does not establish that the project had a cost estimate of Rs. 3,000 crores.

The review examined posts claiming that China’s president had thanked Sirasa TV for using Chinese in a broadcast, and that the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka had shared this message on Twitter. The alleged message was presented as a response to Sirasa’s use of Chinese text after reporting on the Colombo Port City bill. The review identifies the post’s claim as a supposed special thanks from the president for promoting Chinese in Sri Lankan mass communication. The review says the relevant Sirasa broadcast followed the passage of the Port City bill in Parliament on May 20, 2021, and aired the following evening. It describes a Chinese-language segment appearing at the end of the news item. This establishes the setting for the circulating post, but does not establish that the Embassy actually published the alleged message. To check the alleged source, the investigators say they examined the Embassy’s official Twitter account and compared the circulating image with a genuine Embassy post from May 21. They report that the genuine post concerned China’s assistance to developing countries and vaccine supplies, and that the alleged congratulatory wording was a fabricated alteration of it. The review also notes that the circulating text exceeded Twitter’s character limit and included spelling errors, and says an Embassy political official confirmed the posts were fake.
