Publisher’s rating:

The review examined two parts of Yair Golan’s defense of the government: that unity governments are generally larger than ordinary governments, and that the current government was “orders of magnitude” smaller than its predecessor. It found the first point broadly supported by the figures, but said the comparison omitted how many legislators supported each government. The review reports that the current government had 27 ministers when sworn in and 28 after Eli Avidar joined; it also notes that the average unity government had about 26 ministers, compared with about 19 for an Israeli government overall. The current government was therefore large by minister count, not small compared with unity governments. The review’s central comparison was the number of ministers relative to the coalition supporting them. It says the current coalition had 61 members, while unity-government coalitions averaged 88.5. On that measure, the current government offered about 4.5 ministerial posts for every ten coalition members, versus about three in unity governments on average. The review also says the current government was an outlier even in an absolute comparison: it had the third-largest number of ministers in the country’s history at its formation. The claim that it was smaller than the previous government was true if “smaller” meant fewer ministers: the review compares 28 ministers with 34 in the Netanyahu–Gantz government. But the proportional comparison undercuts the suggestion that the difference was substantial. After Avidar joined, the review calculates 4.59 ministers per ten coalition members in the current government, nearly the previous government’s 4.66. Its conclusion was that the government was smaller in absolute minister count, but the gap was negligible when coalition size was taken into account.

FACT CHECK:

Publisher’s rating: False

The review investigated a social-media video claiming a close family link between Ranil Wickremesinghe and Mahinda Rajapaksa through their wives’ family connections. Its specific genealogical allegation was that Shiranti Rajapaksa was the only daughter of E. P. Wickremasinghe, described as a brother of Ranil’s father, Esmond Wickremasinghe. The review says it checked the family-history claim and contacted people from both families. [S1]
