Claim: Annamalai not condemned the Tamil Nadu govt decision regarding pennycuick statue

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerns a report circulating on social media that BJP leader K. Annamalai opposed the Tamil Nadu government’s announcement to erect a statue of Colonel John Pennycuick in England. The review describes Pennycuick as the engineer behind the Mullaperiyar dam and says people in the Theni and Madurai areas hold him in high regard. It reports that the state government announced the statue in Camberley, identified as Pennycuick’s birthplace. The review says the viral post portrayed Annamalai as opposing that announcement. The review’s account says Annamalai and Kathir News denied that he had made the reported opposition statement. It also points to Annamalai’s post on X dated January 16, 2022, in which he called the circulated material “false news”; the excerpt links to an archived version of that post. The review does not reproduce a separate recording or full transcript of the alleged remarks, so its account of the rebuttal and Annamalai’s post is the evidence presented here. On that basis, the review concludes that the claim that Annamalai opposed the statue decision is not reliable. The crucial distinction is between the government’s announcement—described in the review as a statue in Camberley—and the unsupported attribution to Annamalai of opposition to that announcement.

Claim: AIADMK ruling period data being shared now with dmk government

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The viral post used a News 7 Tamil card stating that Tamil Nadu had fallen from third to eleventh among growing states, and added that this had happened within six months of the DMK taking office. The review identifies the card as an older one: it was dated August 9, 2021, while M.K. Stalin had become chief minister on May 7. Thus, the card appeared about three months into the DMK administration, not after six months as the post implied. The review also says the original card did not attribute the decline to the DMK government. To check what the ranking referred to, the review searched the Tamil Nadu government’s 122-page finance white paper. It reports that page 111 described an inter-state average-growth study by the Madras School of Economics: Tamil Nadu ranked third for 2004–05 to 2011–12, then eleventh for 2012–13 to 2018–19. The latter period fell within AIADMK rule, not the DMK’s first six months. The post therefore reassigned an older-period comparison to the wrong government and time frame. UP CM Yogi Adityanath has threatened to leave the BJP and join the SP if Amit Shah talks of changing the CM

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

FACTLY investigated a viral screenshot styled as a K News breaking-news graphic. It purported to report that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath would leave the BJP and join the Samajwadi Party if Amit Shah discussed replacing him. The review’s conclusion was that there was no evidence Adityanath had made that statement; it identified the circulated image as a manipulated screenshot, rather than authentic channel coverage. The review describes searches for reports of the alleged remarks. It says those searches found no reports, and notes that K News had no corresponding item on its website or its YouTube, Facebook, or Twitter accounts. The absence of other reports is presented as part of the investigation, alongside checks of the channel’s own outlets—not as proof by itself that the remarks were never made. The most direct evidence described is K News’s response: FACTLY reports that the channel tweeted on 12 January 2022 that the screenshot using its template was fake and that it had not broadcast the purported news. The review also says the screenshot did not resemble the channel’s usual breaking-news template. Together, the channel’s denial and the review’s assessment of the image undermine the screenshot’s claimed provenance and the allegation it appears to support.

Publisher’s rating: False

The post paired a photograph of a luxurious mansion with a claim that it belonged to Min Aung Hlaing, linking the alleged property to a broader accusation that he wanted more power while the country was being destroyed and people were being killed. Fact Crescendo’s investigation examined the photograph’s attribution. It did not separately verify those broader political and casualty claims. The review says it used Google reverse-image search and found the same-format photograph in a 2018 Twitter post identifying the mansion as Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen’s villa in Tuol Krasang. It also reports finding a photograph of Hun Sen’s mansion on the official Facebook page of CPP lawmaker Sieng Nam, whose post described the house as being in Takhmao City, Kandal Province. On that basis, the review concluded that the image did not show Min Aung Hlaing’s house and identified it as Hun Sen’s. The evidence presented therefore contradicts the post’s identification of the pictured mansion; it should not be taken as a separate investigation into every other allegation in the post.

Photo collage proving that Akhilesh Yadav met Hindu seers only after the Yogi Adityanath government came into power in UP

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The collage juxtaposed Akhilesh Yadav with Muslim clerics and Hindu seers to suggest that he met Hindu seers only after the Yogi Adityanath government came to power in Uttar Pradesh. FACTLY’s review distinguishes the dates of the pictured encounters from the broader claim about whether Yadav had met Hindu religious figures before then. It reports that the clerics’ photograph was from before the 2017 government change, while the seers’ photograph was later—but says Yadav had met Hindu sants and sadhus while he was chief minister. To investigate the collage, the review says it used reverse image search to trace the two pictures. It found the Muslim-clerics photograph in an article from 2017 and the Hindu-seers photograph in a 2021 tweet by Yadav. The review describes the clerics’ February 2017 visit as one to express support ahead of the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, and the later seers’ photograph as accompanying Yadav’s Diwali wishes. The decisive counterexample cited is an earlier encounter: a 29 November 2016 tweet from Yadav’s official Twitter account showed him meeting Hindu sants and sadhus to discuss the mela at Prayag. That predates the Yogi Adityanath-led government and contradicts the collage’s implication that Yadav met Hindu seers only after it took power. The collage’s two photographs therefore do not establish the broader timeline it claims.

The claim arose from a sentence in a Wikipedia article about the World Economic Forum (WEF), also circulated in a screenshot at the end of 2021. The review checked the article’s edit history and the material cited for the disputed passage. It reports that the sentence was added on November 29, 2021, and removed the next day, with an edit note saying it had been deliberately altered to present conspiracy theories as supported evidence. The review also describes the Wikipedia discussion about the changes and the translation issue.
