Claim: fake news spreading that bjp distributed food in back stage of a hunger strike

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerned a viral news card presented as a Thanthi TV report. It alleged that food was served behind the pandal for a BJP hunger strike in Chennai, led by state president Annamalai. The review says the protest was organized by the Tamil Nadu BJP and other Hindu organizations after allegations that a student from Ariyalur had been pressured to convert and died by suicide; the protest called for justice for her parents. The card’s accompanying photograph was used to suggest that BJP participants ate during the fast. Fact Crescendo reports checking whether Thanthi TV had published the card by reviewing its Facebook and Twitter accounts and contacting the person responsible for its digital division. It says neither account carried the card and that the digital division confirmed it was fake. The review also notes that the card’s design and Tamil font did not match Thanthi TV’s usual cards. These checks address the card’s claimed source, rather than establishing that the event depicted in the photo happened at the hunger strike. The review separately traces the photograph’s provenance. It identifies a person shown eating as BJP spokesperson S.G. Surya and says the image was from food distribution to people affected by flooding several years earlier. It reports finding the image shared in connection with food distribution during the November 2020 floods, including a post dated November 28, 2020—well before the hunger strike and the card’s circulation on January 25, 2022. On this basis, the review concludes that the card was fake and that its photograph did not show BJP members eating at the hunger-strike pandal.

Prominente Anhänger des Great Reset tragen runde Anstecknadel.

The claim concerns a colorful circular lapel pin worn by prominent figures, including Bill Gates, WHO Director Tedros Ghebreyesus, Boris Johnson and Emmanuel Macron. The review describes a social-media collage showing those four wearing the pin and says the posts presented it as a sign of support for Klaus Schwab’s “Great Reset.” It also distinguishes that pin from a separate image of a similar-looking circle labeled “de Great Reset.” The review identifies the pin’s symbol as the logo for the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals, adopted by UN member states in 2015 and known as Agenda 2030. It says the goals address poverty, hunger, health risks and sustainable development. The review also traces the circular symbol’s use by Goalkeepers, an organization founded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to bring political leaders together around progress on those goals. The pin was worn by participants at Goalkeepers conferences; the review specifically notes Macron’s participation in a 2018 conference. The separate “de Great Reset” image came from the cover of the Dutch magazine Epoque, published in December 2020, rather than from the pin. The review explains that a montage combining Goalkeepers-event photos with a graphic presenting distorted claims about Agenda 2030 created a misleading association. It also notes that the World Economic Forum, Schwab’s book and the UN development goals are distinct from one another. Thus, the pin’s documented connection in the reviewed material is to the UN goals and Goalkeepers, not to the Great Reset.

Claim: Palanimanickam not made this comment on Udayanidhi Stalin

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The review examined a purported Thanthi TV news card claiming that DMK MP Palanimanickam was saddened by Lavanya’s death and disappointed that Udayanidhi Stalin had not visited to pay his respects. The card was shared on Facebook, including by the page The Naatumaadu 2.0 on 24 January 2022. The investigation’s conclusion concerns whether Palanimanickam made the quoted comment, not whether Udayanidhi attended a memorial. To check the card’s provenance, the investigators compared its design with Thanthi TV’s news cards and searched the broadcaster’s Facebook page. They report that the card did not appear there on 23 January, and that Thanthi TV posted a denial on 24 January, stamping the image “FAKE NEWS.” They also report that a search found no news report confirming Palanimanickam had made the statement. As a further check, the investigators say they found Palanimanickam’s own Twitter post identifying the examined card as fake. On the evidence described in the review, the card was fabricated and does not establish that he made the comment.

Publisher’s rating: Missing Context

The review investigated a social-media image presented as showing members of the One Country, One Law Presidential Task Force failing to stand for the national anthem. It traced the image to a public-consultation meeting held on 3 December in the Trincomalee District Secretariat auditorium, rather than establishing that the anthem was being played when the photograph was taken. The review says it used a reverse-image search to identify the image’s earlier setting. {S1}
