Visuals of Prime Minister Modi posing for photo-op during a meeting
Publisher’s rating: MISLEADING
The viral post presented footage of Prime Minister Narendra Modi looking ahead with an open file in his hand as evidence that he was posing for a photo-op during a meeting. FACTLY’s review identifies the footage as showing the second high-level meeting Modi chaired over the Russia–Ukraine war, held on 28 February 2022. The review says news agencies also reported the meeting and broadcast footage of it. (S1: “In the viral video, Prime Minister Modi can be seen gazing at something in front of him, with a paper file open in his hand.”; “These visuals are from the second high level meeting chaired by the Prime Minister over the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, on 28 February 2022.”) The review’s central check is what participants were looking at in the meeting footage. It describes the foreign secretary, Harsh Vardhan Shringla, operating a screen with a remote control, while other attendees looked toward that screen. In the same visuals, Modi is positioned facing the screen, which the review says was directly in front of him. That provides an ordinary meeting-related explanation for his gaze, rather than evidence that he was posing for a photograph. (S1: “From the visuals related to the meeting, as telecast by the news agencies, it is clearly evident that PM Modi was looking at a screen in front of him, while the foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla was operating the projector using a remote control.”; “Even the other members present in the meeting can be seen looking at the screen which was being used by the foreign secretary for a presentation.”) The review also notes that visuals from another earlier meeting on the Ukraine crisis showed a screen in front of Modi, and says the foreign secretary’s operation of the screen in the viral footage supports its interpretation that Modi was watching a presentation. It concludes that the footage shows him looking at a presentation, not posing for a photo-op. (S1: “Visuals of another previously held meeting on the Ukraine crisis chaired by PM Modi clearly show a screen in front of him.”; “To sum it up, these visuals actually show PM Modi looking at a presentation made by foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla.”)

President Zelensky op de foto met een voetbalshirt met een hakenkruis.
Publisher’s rating: De afbeelding is bewerkt. In werkelijkheid was het shirt bedrukt met zijn naam en het rugnummer ‘95’.
The image in question shows Volodymyr Zelensky holding the back of a football shirt that appears to bear a swastika. The investigation traced the unaltered photograph to Zelensky’s Instagram post: on 8 June 2021, he presented Ukraine’s new national-team shirt ahead of the European Championship, posting images of both its front and back. The image circulating with the apparent symbol was made from the photograph showing the shirt’s back. The review compared the circulating image with the original. It reports that the background is the same in both, and that folds in the fabric visible near the number 5 in the original also appear in the manipulated image, including beside the apparent swastika. Those matching folds indicate that parts of the original image were cut and rearranged to form the symbol. The shirt was actually printed with Zelensky’s name and the number 95. The review also places the image in the context of claims portraying Zelensky and his government as Nazi. Separately, it notes that the shirt did attract controversy: the UEFA objected to the political wording “Glory to our heroes” printed inside the collar and required its removal. That dispute concerned the slogan, not a swastika on the shirt.

Fact Crescendo examined two social-media posts that attributed recent events to the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP). One said the party had flattened the bridge leading to Paravi Duwa in Matara; the other implied there was no countrywide fuel shortage and that the people queuing at filling stations were JVP supporters making up 3% of the population. The review’s conclusion was that both posts were false or misleading.

The video circulated with a post identifying the speaker as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and dating the footage to 2014. The dpa review identifies the speaker instead as Ukrainian politician Oleh Tjahnybok, of the nationalist party Swoboda. It traces the clip to a segment from the ARD programme *Anne Will* broadcast on 12 March 2014, while noting that the footage itself was recorded earlier, in 2004. Thus, the video’s association with a 2014 broadcast does not establish that Zelensky is the person speaking.
