Narendra Modi’s statement about privatisation of Indian Railways before he became the Prime Minister of the country
Publisher’s rating: MISLEADING
The claim concerns a video presented as showing Narendra Modi opposing privatisation of Indian Railways before he became Prime Minister, supposedly during the previous Congress government. The review identifies the remarks as coming from his address at a rally in Varanasi on 25 December 2014—after he became Prime Minister. It reports that he rejected rumours of privatisation while saying private and foreign capital could be used to improve railway infrastructure. To check the video’s provenance, FACTLY says it searched for credible details using relevant keywords and found the same video published by NDTV on 25 September 2014. NDTV described the speaker as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the occasion as a Varanasi rally where he ruled out railway privatisation. The review also cites news reports giving the speech’s fuller wording: Modi said the Railways were not being privatised and that this was neither the government’s wish nor its thinking. The central correction is about timing and context: the remarks did not come before Modi became Prime Minister. They were made in December 2014, after he had taken office. The review further notes that his remarks distinguished privatisation from the use of private or foreign capital to improve railway infrastructure; presenting them simply as an earlier, categorical rejection of any private involvement leaves out that qualification.

The claim presents an image of Rahul Gandhi and Jyotiraditya Scindia as current, and uses it to suggest that Scindia was ignored in front of Gandhi despite his ties to Nepal’s royal family. Vishvas News investigated the image and concluded it was not recent: it was from 2011 and was being circulated with a misleading current-event context. The review describes the image as a photograph, despite the claim’s reference to a video. [S1]

The post implied that Sajith Premadasa was ready to take the prime minister’s job under President Gotabaya Rajapaksa during Sri Lanka’s 2022 political and economic crisis. The review traced the words behind the claim to a speech Premadasa made in June 2020 at a meeting in Katubedda, Moratuwa, as the 2020 parliamentary election approached—not to a statement about accepting office during the later crisis. The distinction is the setting and condition attached to the original remark: according to the review, Premadasa was discussing becoming prime minister if his Samagi Jana Balawegaya party won the 2020 election, and working with Rajapaksa in that circumstance. The review says the archived NOIZETV.LK report of the remark had been removed, and that Sirasa News also reported the 2020 statement. (“NOIZETV.LK පුවත මේ වන විට ඉවත්කර ඇති අතර එය Archive කර ඇති අතර එම වාර්තාවට පිවිසිය හැකියි මෙතනින්. It reports that the media office said he was not willing to serve as prime minister under Rajapaksa, and that the review’s scan of mainstream media found no current statement of the kind circulating online. It concludes that the old, conditional election remark was being presented as a new offer during the crisis.

Video of PM Modi talking to media in a drunken state
Publisher’s rating: FALSE
FACTLY examined a social-media video said to show PM Modi speaking to media while drunk. The review says the clip was taken during Modi’s visit to Germany and that the viral version had been altered to make him appear intoxicated. It identifies The Lallantop’s YouTube channel as the source of the original version. To check the video, the review searched online for similar clips and compared the circulated version with the original. It reports that the original clip runs for about 19 seconds, while the posted version runs for 26 seconds. The review attributes this difference to the original being slowed down, rather than treating the altered playback as evidence of intoxication. FACTLY’s conclusion is that the video does not establish that Modi was drunk: the version presented to viewers had been slowed down to create that impression. The excerpt does not provide a link to the original video or details of a frame-by-frame comparison, so the explanation rests on the review’s account of the comparison and the reported duration difference.

Manmohan Singh did not take part in any celebrations as Modi did in recent Europe tour
Publisher’s rating: MISLEADING
The claim concerns a video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi playing a dhol during a celebration with the Indian diaspora in Denmark. The post contrasted Modi’s participation with former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, asserting that Singh had never done anything similar during his ten years in office. The review identifies the video as footage from Modi’s recent three-nation Europe tour and says the celebration was organised by the Indian diaspora in Denmark. To check the comparison, the review says it searched Google using relevant keywords and found visuals of Singh playing drums at two different events: a 2006 cultural festival of North-East and the 2012 silver jubilee celebrations of the Zonal Cultural Centers. Those examples directly contradict the absolute assertion that Singh never took part in celebrations. They do not establish that Singh participated as often as Modi, or that the two occasions were otherwise alike. The review also places leaders’ participation in a broader event context: it says guests at gatherings commonly join celebrations. Its conclusion is limited and specific: Singh did take part on a few occasions, so the post’s claim that he never did is misleading. The article does not use those examples to claim that Singh’s participation matched Modi’s frequency.
The viral video showed German politician Jens Ahrends speaking under an ORF logo and was shared with comments suggesting that traditional media were finally reporting the truth. The review reports that the logo was added to the video and that the speech was not broadcast by ORF. It identifies the speech as a roughly two-minute contribution Ahrends delivered on 23 February 2022 during the 130th plenary session of the Lower Saxony state parliament, where he was an unaffiliated politician. To check the broadcast claim, APA-Faktencheck says it asked the Austrian broadcaster directly; ORF confirmed that the viral contribution had never aired. The review also compared the claim with the ORF channels’ television schedules for that date and found no matching item. The speech’s appearance in a video bearing an ORF logo therefore does not establish that ORF transmitted it. The review separately examines the content of Ahrends’s speech. It says he listed claims and narratives associated with opponents of coronavirus measures, including arguments about reported suspected vaccine reactions, excess deaths, and deaths in Israel among people who had received third or fourth doses. It gives examples of relevant qualifications: reports in databases of suspected vaccine reactions do not by themselves show that vaccines are unsafe, and a high number of vaccinated people among deaths or hospitalizations does not by itself show that vaccines are ineffective. The review also notes that Austria had about 10 percent more deaths in 2020 than the five-year average, contrary to Ahrends’s assertion that there was no excess mortality that year.
Recent photo of BJP leader Jyotiraditya Scindia and Rahul Gandhi attending the same marriage in Nepal.
Publisher’s rating: FALSE
The claim concerned a collage suggesting that BJP leader Jyotiraditya Scindia attended Rahul Gandhi’s friend’s wedding in Nepal. The review distinguishes the collage’s two images rather than treating them as evidence of one event. It says Rahul Gandhi had visited Nepal for a private marriage, while the images being circulated appeared in the wake of controversy about a video of him at a Nepal nightclub. For the first image, the review reports using reverse image search and finding the same photograph in a Hindustan Times article from 15 October 2011. Its caption places Gandhi and Scindia at the wedding reception of Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk and Queen Jetsun Pema, at Chang Lime Thang Stadium in Thimphu. Thus, the image of the two men together was from a different wedding, in Bhutan, in 2011—not the wedding in Nepal. The second image was from the Nepal wedding, but the review says it showed singer Saraswoti Khatri with Gandhi and did not show Scindia. It reports finding the image in an ABP article and quotes Khatri’s post describing her performance for Gandhi at the ceremony. The review also says it found no news reports of Scindia attending the Nepal wedding and notes that Scindia said he attended a community meeting in Montreal on 4 May 2022. Taken together, the images do not establish that Scindia attended Gandhi’s friend’s wedding: one is from an earlier event in Bhutan, and the other does not include Scindia.
Claim: Amit shah not threatened tamil nadu govt regarding hindi and sanskrit
Publisher’s rating: FALSE
The review investigates a news card attributed to Jaya Plus which claimed Amit Shah warned that Tamil Nadu would not receive central government funds unless it changed its opposition to Hindi and Sanskrit. The claim was being circulated on social media, and the review says a Facebook user posted it on May 4, 2022. The card’s alleged statement included the line that Tamil Nadu should remember it is in India, not Pakistan. The question examined is whether Shah made the threat and whether Jaya Plus published the card. The review reports that it found no news report that Shah made the alleged statement on May 2, 2022, or afterward. It then checked Jaya Plus’s Facebook page for cards published on May 2. The page had a card featuring Shah’s photograph, but its text concerned an emergency meeting about coal shortages and power supply, not Hindi, Sanskrit, or funding. The review says the genuine card and the altered version were both posted at 12:31 p.m. on May 2, 2022, and that the text area appeared to have been changed. The review also says it contacted Jaya Plus’s news department, which confirmed that the circulated card was fake. It concludes that the card had been edited to add the false claim; its finding concerns the authenticity of this specific card and the threat attributed to Shah, rather than a general assessment of language policy or government funding.
