The claim concerned Uch Sereyyuth, a former Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP) politician, and his participation in Candle Light Party (CLP) activity ahead of Cambodia’s 2022 commune election. Reports said he attended a CLP meeting on May 15 while still under a five-year political ban. The investigation found that the ban had already been lifted, so his participation did not breach it. To check the claim, Fact Crescendo Cambodia says it reviewed which CNRP politicians had been released from the ban and interviewed people relevant to the case. The article reports that a royal decree allowed Sereyyuth to resume political activity from April 1. A Ministry of Justice spokesman confirmed the decree to the publisher, and a Ministry of Interior spokesman also confirmed the ban had been lifted. Sereyyuth told the publisher he had requested the lift in March and received it in April. The article also checked his role at the CLP gathering: party spokesman Thach Setha said he saw Sereyyuth there and that Sereyyuth had been assigned to coordinate party leaders in Kampong Cham. The report notes that the party had not yet decided what position to give him. Its conclusion is that Sereyyuth had been released from the ban before resuming political activity with the CLP for the 2022 commune election.

(VIDEO)

Publisher’s rating: Misleading

The review examines a video circulated in May 2022 that appeared to show former minister Dallas Alahapperuma praising Ranil Wickremesinghe as a good leader. It says the footage was not a recent statement: the clip came from a press conference held on 21 August 2019, amid an internal United National Party dispute over its presidential candidate. The review says it examined the press conference to establish what Dallas had said in full. In the fuller remarks, Dallas was describing what UNP leaders and MPs had said about Wickremesinghe, including that he was a philosopher, disciplined, capable and honest. Dallas’s point, according to the review, was that the same people who had made those claims were now working to remove Wickremesinghe from the party. Thus, the circulated excerpt’s praise-like wording was presented without making clear that Dallas was recounting the party members’ opinions, rather than expressing them as his own assessment. The review also compared the circulated excerpt with the full statement and with a segment broadcast by Ada Derana on 21 August 2019. It reports that the broadcast likewise framed the description as words UNP MPs had repeated over several years. The evidence described in the article therefore supports the distinction between Dallas quoting or summarizing others’ views and Dallas personally praising Wickremesinghe: the clip took only part of a longer explanation and omitted that distinction.

Half of people think china is collapsing and the other half think china is doing great, however, idk anyone who thinks the west is doing great

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim appears in a post by the Twitter account “Lord Miles Routledge Adventures,” alongside a screenshot presented as a CNN tweet. The review quotes the post’s observation that “Half of people think china is collapsing and the other half think china is doing great, however, idk anyone who thinks the west is doing great.” The fact-check’s specific question was whether CNN had published the accompanying story—not whether that observation accurately described public opinion. The screenshot attributed to CNN said a leaked Chinese geopolitical strategy document predicted the United States and Western Europe would collapse by 2050 because of cultural and demographic conflict. Vishvas News reports that it checked CNN’s social-media accounts and found no matching tweet, then searched Twitter for the wording and found no such content. It also noted that the screenshot’s text exceeded the character count. These checks were followed by a direct inquiry to Matt Dornic, CNN’s head of strategic communications. Dornic told the outlet that CNN had neither published the story nor posted it to its Twitter feed, and called the image fake. The evidence therefore addresses the post’s purported CNN source: the review concludes that the screenshot was fabricated and that CNN did not publish the story it depicted. It does not establish whether the post’s separate characterization of people’s views about China or the West is true; that broader opinion is distinct from the attribution the investigation checked.

Publisher’s rating: Satire

The review examines a social-media video presented as showing Ranil Wickremesinghe dancing in celebration after becoming prime minister on May 12, 2022. It says the footage actually showed Wickremesinghe dancing with actress Irangani Serasinghe, and that the same video had circulated well before the appointment. The review traces an earlier instance to January 2018, when Ranjan Ramanayake shared it with a description of the pair dancing together. The investigation says it looked for the video’s earlier appearance because the footage had already circulated years before the 2022 posts. It reports finding Ramanayake’s 2018 social-media post, and notes that the version recirculated in a satirical manner had been edited to play in reverse. This earlier provenance contradicts the posts’ presentation of the clip as a recording of a celebration on the night of the appointment. The review adds that it found no media reports of Wickremesinghe attending a party and dancing after becoming prime minister. It instead reports that on the night he took office he visited Buddhist religious sites to receive blessings. Its conclusion is that the circulating clip was an older video, rather than footage of him celebrating the 2022 appointment.

The review investigated a letter circulated on social media as a message from Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake to Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. The letter purportedly asked India to intervene in Sri Lanka’s political situation. The review’s conclusion was that the letter was fabricated, rather than an authentic appeal from Dissanayake or the JVP. To check its authenticity, the review says it looked for the letter on the official Facebook pages of the JVP and Dissanayake, and checked whether major news outlets had reported that the JVP sent it. It then contacted JVP media secretary Upul Ranjan. According to the review, he said the party had not sent such a letter and that it was fabricated using JVP letterhead. The excerpt does not identify any specific social-media account as the letter’s creator. The review also reports that its Indian team contacted Raj Kamal, a media and communications adviser at India’s Ministry of External Affairs. He said the minister had not received the letter and described its format as unlike the usual official correspondence sent by foreign countries to ministries. Taken together, the party’s denial and the ministry representative’s account directly address both the claimed sender and the claimed recipient; the excerpt provides no evidence that the purported letter was sent.

Mahinda Rajapaksa and his family members leaving the country secretly after May 9, 2022 incident.

Publisher’s rating: Misleading

The review investigated a photo circulated as showing former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and his family leaving the country on May 10, 2022, after his resignation the previous day. The investigation’s conclusion is about the photo’s date and what it depicts: it says the image was taken in 2015, not during the events of May 2022. Thus, the image did not establish that the family had secretly left the country after the May 9 incident. [Evidence: “A photo was widely circulated on social media alleging to be an image of former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and his family leaving the country on the 10th of May, soon after his resignation on 9th of May.”; “We did a reverse image search of the viral image and it was revealed that this photo was not taken on the 10th of this month but on the 09th of January 2015.”] The review identifies the older scene as Mahinda Rajapaksa boarding an Air Force helicopter to travel to Tangalle after losing the 2015 presidential election. It reports that his sons Namal, Yoshitha and Rohitha were with him at the time. This makes the image’s apparent connection to the 2022 departure claim misleading, even though it shows Rajapaksa and family members travelling by helicopter. [Evidence: “This is a photograph of Mahinda Rajapaksa boarding a Sri Lanka Air Force MI17 helicopter to fly to Tangalle after his defeat in the 2015 Presidential Election.”; “According to media reports, his sons Namal, Yoshitha and Rohitha were with him at the time.”] The review also reports that Namal Rajapaksa said the family had no plans to leave Sri Lanka and that Mahinda was at a safe location after protesters breached the compound fence at Temple Trees. Those statements provide contemporaneous context, but the review’s decisive check of the viral image is its identification as a 2015 photograph—not proof, by itself, of everyone’s movements in May 2022. [Evidence: “Namal Rajapaksa, told AFP on Tuesday, Rajapaksa family had no plans to leave Sri Lanka.”; “Mahinda Rajapaksa was taken to an undisclosed location after protesters breached the compound fence at Temple Trees, his official residence in the capital Colombo, on Monday night.”]

SJB and JVP to make an interim government under the premiership of Karu Jayasuriya

Publisher’s rating: Misleading

The claim concerned a purported agreement by Sri Lanka’s SJB and JVP to form an interim government led by former speaker Karu Jayasuriya. The circulated WhatsApp message said the parties had reached the agreement at a meeting at the President’s House and described a temporary premiership and a short-term government. The review checked whether that alleged meeting and agreement had been reported and contacted the media units of both parties. The review found no mainstream-media report confirming the claimed meeting. More decisively, both parties’ media units denied that such a meeting involving them had taken place and rejected the claim that they were joining to form a coalition under Jayasuriya. The review therefore found no basis for presenting the viral message as an agreement between the two parties. The claim also blurred separate political positions. The review reported that SJB leader Sajith Premadasa and JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake had each indicated willingness to take the prime-ministerial role and form an interim government if President Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigned. It separately reported that Jayasuriya’s media secretary said neither party had asked him to become prime minister. That distinction matters: the reported individual positions and Jayasuriya’s separate willingness to serve did not establish the alleged joint agreement.
