Unter dem Motto «Meldungen, auf die wir uns diesen Winter freuen dürfen» war das falsche Zitat des SPD-Politikers neben weiteren fingierten Nachrichten-Screenshots und falschen Zitaten in einem Telegram-Kanal verbreitet worden.

To check the image’s provenance, FACTLY says it ran a reverse image search and found an uncropped version in a Free Press Journal article. The review reports that the article connected the pictures to Modi’s visit to the gurudwara for the 400th Prakash Parv of Guru Teg Bahadur. FACTLY also points to steps visible beside the washbasin in the image as evidence of the entrance setting. The review says it then searched for visuals of the gurudwara and found images of a wash area beside the entrance steps, as well as visuals of devotees washing their hands and feet there. Together, the image’s wider setting and the described use of that area support the conclusion that the photo shows Modi washing his hands at the gurudwara entrance, rather than inside a toilet.
