PM Modi is the biggest contender for the Nobel Peace Prize – Asle Toje

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim arose from social media posts attributing to Asle Toje the statement that PM Modi was the biggest contender for the Nobel Peace Prize. The review places the claim in the setting of Toje’s India visit: he attended a roundtable on “Alternative Development Model & Peace” at the India International Center in New Delhi on 14 March 2023, then spoke with Indian media. It reports that Toje praised India and Modi, including Modi’s intervention in stopping Russia from using nuclear weapons, but distinguishes that praise from endorsing Modi as a leading prize contender. To check the attribution, the review says it considered both Toje’s roundtable remarks and his interviews with Indian media. It reports that he did not explicitly affirm Modi as the top contender in either setting. In one interview, when asked about Modi’s prospects of becoming a Nobel Peace Prize ambassador, Toje replied that any leader should aspire to earn the prize by doing enough for peace, while emphasizing that “the world comes first, and award comes next.” The review also cites a Business Standard report saying Toje denied that he had described Modi as the biggest contender; FACTLY says it had sought clarification from Toje and would update its article if he responded. The review adds an important limitation on claims about nominees: it says Nobel Prize rules keep nominee and nominator details secret for 50 years, and quotes the Nobel Committee’s statement that it does not announce nominees and that advance speculation is either guesswork or information from nominators. Its conclusion is that Toje’s praise was exaggerated into an endorsement he did not make.

The image reviewed by dpa was circulating online with the suggestion that a coalition involving the WEF and Mark Rutte was keeping Thierry Baudet off the Provincial Council ballot. It encouraged people who wanted to vote for him to write his name on the ballot. Dpa says the image was not genuine FVD communication: it could not find the image on FVD’s social media channels, and following the image’s advice would generally produce an invalid vote.

Image showing P. Chidambaram touching the feet of Jayalalithaa

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerns a viral image said to show P. Chidambaram touching the feet of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. FACTLY reports that the image does show a man touching Jayalalithaa’s feet, but identifies him as former Tamil Nadu minister Thambi Durai, not Chidambaram. 【S1】 The review describes using reverse image search, which led to a blog post titled “Tamil Nadu ministers falling at Jayalalitha’s feet.” That post shared the image and identified the man as Thambi Durai. FACTLY also notes that it found no information indicating Chidambaram had fallen at Jayalalithaa’s feet. The investigation therefore disputes the identification of the person in the image, rather than whether the image depicts someone touching Jayalalithaa’s feet. 【S1】
