The review examines two posts presented as praise for Anura Kumara Dissanayake during his South Korean visit. One attributed a complimentary statement to the mayor of Daegu (also called Taegu); the other portrayed a Korean fish-products company owner praising Dissanayake. The review says the posts circulated while he was visiting South Korea, and reports that the JVP media division denied the claims in both posts. To check the first post, the review used reverse-image search on the photograph shown as Kim Il-sung. It identified the person pictured instead as Park Won-soon, formerly Seoul’s mayor, and separately identified Hong Joon-pyo as Daegu’s current mayor. The review also says it found no international-media report of the alleged praise and that the JVP media division called the post false. These checks undermine the post’s attribution and its claimed context; the review does not present evidence of a statement by Daegu’s mayor praising Dissanayake. For the second post, the review reports that a reverse-image search found the photograph was a stock image listed on iStock, rather than evidence identifying the pictured person as a Korean company owner. It adds that the JVP media division denied the post’s claims. Together, the image checks and the reported denial address the two specific social-media claims described in the article.

Publisher’s rating: לא נכון

The review checks Benjamin Netanyahu’s assertion that he was opposition leader during Israel’s disengagement from Gaza. It distinguishes his eventual departure from the government from the separate question of whether he held the opposition leadership during the evacuations. The review says the disengagement was carried out between August and September 2005, while the Likud was still the governing party; Kadima was formed only later. Since the opposition leader had to come from an opposition faction, the review concludes Netanyahu could not have held that position at the time. The review identifies the opposition leader during the disengagement as Tommy Lapid, head of the Shinui party. It says Shinui became the largest opposition party after leaving Sharon’s government at the end of 2004, and that Lapid held the title until November 2005, when Amir Peretz was elected Labor leader and left the government. The review also notes that Netanyahu did become opposition leader in January 2006, after Kadima was formed and Likud ministers left the government—but that was after the disengagement. The investigation also examines the context that may have blurred these distinctions. Netanyahu resigned as finance minister shortly before the evacuation began, but the review reports that he remained part of the governing Likud during the disengagement and had supported the plan at multiple stages, including in a final Knesset vote. It concludes that leaving the government shortly before implementation did not make him opposition leader during the event.

Picture of PM Modi in a lavish attire is a real photo clicked at an event

Publisher’s rating: FALSE

The claim concerns a circulating picture said to show Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wearing lavish attire at a real event. FACTLY reports that the image instead depicts an imagined Met Gala appearance and is AI-generated, not an authentic event photograph. The review describes two lines of checking. It searched official government sources and media websites for evidence that Modi had recently attended an event dressed that way, but found none; it also could not find reputable media outlets featuring the image. It then conducted a reverse image search, which traced the image to Sahid, a digital creator based in West Bengal. According to the review, Sahid posted the image on 03 April 2023 alongside AI-generated depictions of politicians including Rahul Gandhi and Joe Biden, presenting them as imagined Met Gala attendees. When people shared Modi’s image as genuine, Sahid clarified that the pictures were imaginative AI creations. The review says Sahid confirmed that he generated the image in question using Midjourney. This provenance supports the conclusion that the picture is not a real photograph of Modi at an event.
