Rahul Gandhi gave a nonsensical speech about his fathers killers, which could take up to seven days to decipher
Publisher’s rating: MISLEADING
FACTLY examined a viral clip that made Rahul Gandhi appear to speak incoherently about his father’s killers and his own reaction to them. The review traced the clip to Gandhi’s speech at a New Delhi book launch for “The Dalit Truth,” and compared it with the longer video on his official YouTube channel. It reports that the speech was nearly 30 minutes long and that the viral segment was selectively clipped from it. The omitted context changes what Gandhi was discussing. FACTLY says that, during the speech, Gandhi recounted meeting a Dalit man in hospital after the man attempted suicide following a video of Dalit men being beaten in Una, Gujarat. The review places Gandhi’s account of that meeting within a discussion of untouchability, not a discussion of his father’s killers. It says Gandhi described imagining what he would have done if he were in the hospitalised man’s position: killing the person who harmed his brother. According to FACTLY, the viral clip begins at a point that makes Gandhi’s remarks about his father’s killers seem connected to his later expression of anger, while removing the intervening story. In the full-speech context, the remarks about killing refer to the attackers of Dalits in the anecdote, rather than to Gandhi’s father’s killers. The review therefore concludes that the clip gives a misleading impression of what Gandhi was saying.

Publisher’s rating: Misleading
The claim concerned a social-media post and a linked web article attributing a statement to Mihintale chief incumbent Walawahangunuwewe Dhammarathana Thero. The attributed remarks asked MP Patali Champika Ranawaka to take responsibility for the country and make it a place where people would want to stay. The review says the linked article placed those words during a visit by Ranawaka to the Thero. The fact-check’s conclusion is that this attribution to the Mihintale Thero was false. To check the attribution, the publisher says it looked for reports in mainstream media and then contacted the Mihintale Thero. According to the review, he denied making such a statement and said Ranawaka had not visited him. The review also reports that Ranawaka’s media unit said the story was false and that he had not visited the Mihintale temple incumbent. These accounts address both the alleged words and the claimed setting of the encounter. The key distinction in the review is that similar remarks were attributed to a different monk, not to the Mihintale Thero. Ranawaka’s media unit reportedly identified the occasion as a visit to Dimbulagala Aranya Senasanaya’s newly appointed chief, Dimbulagala Rahulalankara Thero. The review concludes that the reported statement belonged to that Dimbulagala monk; it therefore does not substantiate the claim’s attribution to the Mihintale incumbent.

The claim says Joe Biden hosted a dinner for world leaders in New York and excluded Lula, portraying the alleged exclusion as evidence that Brazil had become an international pariah. The Folha review examines that specific allegation about Biden’s reception at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on September 19. It reports that the Brazilian presidency’s communications office, Secom, said Lula had been invited and supplied the official invitation telegram sent by the U.S. State Department on August 29. The review says Lula did not attend because he prioritized bilateral meetings in his New York schedule. It reports that, an hour before the reception, he met Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, and that the next day he met Biden himself. Those details support a different explanation for Lula’s absence than the claim that he was left off the guest list or ignored. The investigation was conducted by Estadão and O Povo and published by Comprova; Folha says it verified the investigation alongside other outlets. The excerpt identifies the invitation telegram and Secom’s account as the evidence for the invitation, but does not reproduce the telegram’s full contents or describe additional independent checks. The supplied evidence therefore supports the review’s conclusion that Lula was invited and chose not to attend, while the claim’s assertion of exclusion is contradicted by the reported invitation.

Priyanka Gandhi spoke the truth about Bhupesh Bagel and other Congress leaders during her speech, which made her apologize later in the Congress office
Publisher’s rating: MISLEADING
The claim concerns a circulated video said to show Priyanka Gandhi speaking disrespectfully about Bhupesh Bagel and other Congress leaders, then apologizing at a Congress office. FACTLY traced the footage to her speech at the Mahila Samridhi Sammelan in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh. The review identifies the original event video as published on the Indian National Congress YouTube channel on 21 September 2023, and says the same speech was also published on Gandhi’s YouTube channel. The review compared the viral clip with the 27-minute speech and reports that the clip was cut from two separate intervals: 16:25–16:56 and 17:11–17:22. It describes the resulting video as altered. In the cited speech, Gandhi distinguishes leaders who seek power for personal gain from those who seek it to help people, and says Chhattisgarh’s Congress leadership belongs to the latter group. That wording does not support the post’s portrayal of her remarks as an attack on Congress leaders. The review concludes that the post is misleading because it presents the clipped and altered footage as evidence for its claim. The excerpt does not provide separate evidence about whether Gandhi later apologized at a Congress office; its stated basis is the alteration and context of the speech video.
