The claim concerns dramatic footage of people climbing a border fence, presented online as showing the Mexico–U.S. border amid concern that Title 42’s expiration would trigger increased migration. The review identifies the footage as being from Melilla, a Spanish enclave in North Africa, rather than the U.S.–Mexico border: “Spectaculaire beelden van migranten die over een grenshek proberen te klimmen worden online gedeeld. Dit zou aan de grens tussen Mexico en de VS zijn” and “De beelden komen uit Melilla, een Spaanse enclave in Noord-Afrika, en dateren uit maart 2022.” [Paraphrased; citations below.]

Deze video toont afval van migranten in België.

Publisher’s rating: De video heeft niets met België of de Vivaldi-regering te maken. De beelden zijn gemaakt in mei 2020 in Parijs.

The post described in the review showed a park strewn with waste and food scraps and blamed migrants, allegedly allowed into Belgium by the Vivaldi government. The investigation instead traced the footage to Paris: it found a version posted on 24 May 2020, before the Belgian government took office on 1 October that year. That chronology rules out the government’s alleged role in the scene, while the identified Paris location contradicts the claim that the video shows a Belgian site. The review places the scene at a square in northern Paris near Porte d’Aubervilliers. It reports that the French voice heard in the footage calls it a Sunday morning and refers to “distributions sauvages,” or volunteer food distribution, as the source of the problem. The review says the visible waste could plausibly have come from such a distribution, but does not establish that as certain. It also notes that the aid was intended for people living on the street generally, not exclusively for migrants. Thus, the video does not document migrant-related waste in Belgium or an event caused by the Vivaldi government. The review’s evidence identifies the footage as pre-government footage from Paris and presents food distribution as a possible explanation for the waste, not a confirmed cause.

The claim that all asylum seekers are private patients is directly addressed by the review, which investigates a circulating letter asserting that asylum seekers were privately insured because they could not join Germany’s statutory health insurance system. The review says that account is wrong: during the first 18 months of residence, asylum seekers are not insured through either the statutory or private system. Instead, municipalities ensure access to medical care, with costs covered by the social welfare office. The review describes that care as more limited than statutory health insurance.

El presidente Andrés Manuel López Obrador se rió en la rueda de prensa en la que habló sobre migrantes muertos en incendio en centro de detención de Ciudad Juárez.

Publisher’s rating: Falta contexto

The claim concerns a clip of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador laughing during the March 28, 2023, morning press conference, the day after a fire at a migrant detention center in Ciudad Juárez killed 39 people. The review says the clip circulated on Twitter on March 29 with a post suggesting he laughed on the day of the deaths. It distinguishes two points: he did laugh during that press conference, but the clip did not show him laughing while discussing the fire. The review reports that he referred to the fire from about minute 6 to minute 8:20, and that he did not laugh during that discussion. To check the clip’s context, the review says it consulted the original press-conference video and compared the timing and subject of the remarks. The laughter occurred about one hour and 38 minutes into the conference, roughly an hour and a half after López Obrador had discussed the fire. By then, the press conference was in its question-and-answer portion. A journalist had asked about education and judicial-system reforms, and López Obrador was discussing his view of university education and professional training. The review describes the immediate exchange before the laugh: López Obrador said that lawyers faced a problem also found among graduates of other fields, including economics, then turned toward anthropologists and archaeologists seated nearby and joked that they were exempt. That sequence supports the review’s conclusion that the laughter in the clip was in response to a different topic, not the deaths or the fire. The review also notes that, when describing how the fire began, López Obrador attributed it to a protest by migrants but did not expressly say they were to blame for the tragedy.
