Publisher’s rating: Martin Hagen liegt richtig.

The review examined Markus Söder’s statement during a BR24 televised discussion with Ludwig Hartmann, focusing on two issues: whether deportations from Bavaria had risen by nearly 25 percent, and whether getting countries of origin to accept their citizens is a practical obstacle. Because Söder did not specify the period for the increase, the review compared both a longer-term span and the first half of 2023 with the corresponding period a year earlier. For the longer comparison, the review used annual figures for deportations under Bavarian jurisdiction. It reports 3,265 deportations in 2018 and 2,046 in 2022, so the end-of-period annual total was lower, not higher. For the short-term comparison, it cites 1,137 deportations in Bavaria in the first half of 2023, against 916 in the first half of 2022. The review identifies that comparison as the basis for the nearly one-quarter increase. Thus, the percentage is supported for that specific year-on-year period, but it does not describe the longer comparison the review also examined. On the cooperation point, the review explains that origin-country cooperation is often needed for tasks such as identifying people and obtaining travel documents. It cites the German Interior Ministry on cooperation as an important factor in identification and speeding up travel-document issuance, and a 2021 European Court of Auditors report that found cooperation difficulties among the reasons for low return rates. Those findings support the existence of cooperation problems, while the review’s wording limits that conclusion to many cases rather than asserting that every deportation depends on the same obstacle.

Publisher’s rating: Enganoso

The post by federal deputy Kim Kataguiri presented footage of people crossing a river as thousands of Venezuelans leaving Venezuela for Brazil and Colombia. The investigation reported that the video instead showed migration through the Darién region, on the Colombia–Panama border, in August. The footage was part of a New York Times special report, republished by Folha, about foreigners trying to enter the United States illegally: the review says it showed people “in the direction of Panama,” not toward Brazil or Colombia. The investigation also distinguished the route shown in the video from the nationalities of the people traveling it. It reported that Venezuelans made up more than half of the migration flow in Darién, but that people of other nationalities were also present; it says the Times reporting confirmed this. Thus, the footage did not establish that all the people shown were Venezuelan, or that their destination was Brazil or Colombia. Kataguiri acknowledged an imprecision about the country where the people were and where they were going, while arguing that the video still showed Venezuelans fleeing Venezuela’s humanitarian crisis. The investigation’s central correction is that the post assigned the footage a different route and destination than the source reporting described, and generalized the nationalities of those shown.

The claim describes a chain-letter story: Muslim parents supposedly asked for pork to be removed from a school canteen, and a Swiss mayor allegedly refused in harsh terms, saying Muslims should adapt to Switzerland’s Jewish-Christian roots. The review found no specific Swiss town named in the purported letter and no Swiss reporting of the alleged incident. It also noted that a prominent incident of this kind would likely have attracted media attention, while acknowledging that related school-meal issues have been publicly discussed in Switzerland.

The claim concerns a purported letter from a Swiss mayor to Muslim parents who supposedly wanted pork removed from a school canteen. The review says the circulating account misidentifies both the location and the author: the text had circulated for years with changing places, and it was not a mayor’s official letter. It first appeared as an opinion piece on a website. The review also notes a Swiss-language clue: the country does not use the title “mayor” for this office; the corresponding roles are called city or municipal president. To trace the text, the review compares its structure and phrasing with earlier versions. It reports that the argument structure and phrases are identical, although some passages were added or removed, so the current version is not always word-for-word the same. The review also points to earlier versions attributed to other places: a Canadian mayor rejected the claim in a 2015 press statement, and the Belgian municipality of Ath said in 2014 that there had been no demand to abolish pork in school canteens. For the text’s reported origin, the review cites a Radio Canada article saying the claim began in 2013 in Juan-les-Pins, France, part of the municipality of Antibes. The underlying dispute, as described in the review, concerned requests from parents for changes to school-canteen menus: some wanted more meat, others less or none. The review distinguishes that episode from the viral letter: a conservative website later published an opinion piece praising the deputy mayor’s decision, and its wording largely matches the text subsequently circulated as an official mayoral letter. The review says the piece was not an official government document.
