The claim concerned the Diakoniewerk Simeon care home on Sonnenallee in Berlin-Neukölln. Posts and a video alleged that residents had to leave so the building could house refugees. The review’s account distinguishes the care home’s closure from the later decision about who would use the property: it says the operator gave up the site because the old building no longer met modern care-home standards and chose to sell rather than pay for renovation. The sequence described in the review does not support the allegation that the care home was closed in order to bring refugees in. Residents were informed after the sale decision had been made, and about 120 were subsequently moved to other care homes. The real-estate company decided to rent the building to Berlin’s State Office for Refugee Affairs after purchasing it. The review says the lease was signed at the end of September 2023, and that renovation costs would be shared by the agency and the real-estate company. The planned refugee accommodation was therefore a later use of a property sold because of its condition and the cost of modernization—not the stated reason the operator ended care-home operations. At the time covered by the review, the required construction work had been authorized and the accommodation was expected to open in the second quarter of 2024.
Publisher’s rating: Enganoso
The posts attached a false interpretation to two videos: they claimed the soldiers shown were Venezuelans who had invaded Brazil, with Lula’s complicity, and were in the country to arrest or pursue Venezuelan refugees. The investigation identified the people in the videos as Brazilian Navy Marines taking part in a standard training exercise, rather than Venezuelan soldiers or troops involved in an actual confrontation. The videos show different parts of that exercise. In one, filmed from inside a house, a civilian appears to confront the Marines, repeating phrases such as “you are in my country” and “shoot me.” In the other, Marines fire and move through an intersection; a vehicle bears the word “Marinha,” and the soldiers can be heard speaking Portuguese. The Navy told the report that both videos showed Marines training, and explained that the exercise simulates a realistic confrontation scenario. The civilian’s confrontation was part of that simulation, not a real clash with residents or refugees. The Navy said the training took place in Itaoca, Espírito Santo, in October 2023, and described this kind of exercise as an annual occurrence. The misleading posts detached the footage from that training context and presented it as an invasion and a threat to refugees—interpretations the evidence described in the review does not support.

Publisher’s rating: Falso
The review examines Chris Christie’s claim about New Jersey’s ethnic diversity, made during the third Republican presidential debate in Miami on November 8, 2023. Christie, identified in the article as New Jersey’s former governor, said the state was the most ethnically diverse in the country. To assess the comparison, the review cites the 2020 Census diversity index. It reports that Hawaii ranked first and New Jersey ranked sixth among states, behind California, Nevada, Maryland and Texas; counting the District of Columbia, New Jersey ranked seventh. The review also cites a more recent WalletHub report, in which New Jersey ranked fourth, behind California, Texas and Hawaii. Both comparisons place New Jersey below the top position, so the evidence presented does not support Christie’s claim that it ranked first. The excerpt gives the rankings but does not explain the underlying calculation or provide further details about the WalletHub report.

The claim concerns a circulating image said to show Ukrainian refugees demonstrating in Spain and demanding more weapons for Ukraine. The review traces the image to a demonstration in Israel, rather than to the Spanish event described in the claim. Its account says the image was presented online with placards reading “Hands off military aid for Ukraine. We need more!” and “Fuck Israel,” creating the impression that the demonstrators were Ukrainian supporters reacting to events in Israel. The review’s investigation instead identifies the scene as a protest against Russia in Tel Aviv in the summer of 2022. The review describes comparing the circulating picture with an image from a Ukrainian-Russian outlet’s article about a July 2022 rally in Israel. In that version, a placard reads “Russia is a terrorist state,” and the review reports that the “Fuck Israel” sign is not visible. It also notes a color difference in a rear placard, which led the investigators to conclude that the circulating image had been edited. These comparisons address both the claimed setting and the text used to portray the demonstrators’ message.
