Publisher’s rating: Misleading

The review says the 8 million figure combines border encounters and estimated “gotaways,” but encounters are not a count of unique people. It also notes that many people were expelled or otherwise removed, and that about 2.3 million migrants were apprehended and released into the United States to await immigration proceedings.

Even including estimates of independent evacuations, it said the northern total was far below the claim; the roughly 126,000 figure covered evacuees from both the north and the south.

The video shows a traffic jam near the Ukrainian-Polish border, but the review says Poland had not closed the border and crossings remained open. It could not determine what caused the queue; stricter checks on people leaving Ukraine were one possible explanation.

The UK Government has met its target to clear the legacy backlog in the asylum system.

Publisher’s rating: Evaluation: Misleading. Data published by the Home Office on January 2 2024, the same day that Mr Sunak posted his remarks, states that the total asylum backlog stood at 98,599 applications as of December 28 2023. It may be that Mr Sunak meant to refer just to “legacy” applications, which is the name given to cases that have been in the system since before June 28 2022. But the Home Office data also states there were 4,537 applications in the legacy backlog as of December 28 2023.

The motion asks the Dutch government to seek an opt-out clause if EU treaties are revised; it does not itself give the Netherlands the right to opt out. The government is not required to implement the motion, and any future opt-out is not guaranteed.

The motion passed, but it does not give the Netherlands an opt-out now. It asks the government to seek one if a future EU treaty change is negotiated; whether it could obtain one is uncertain.

Publisher’s rating: Evaluation: Missing context The validity of the claim depends on how we measure the usage of housing stock and the definition of “migrants”. The original post is correct insofar as the head of the household in nearly half of social-rented households was born outside of the UK, but this is not the case when looking at the background of everyone who is a resident in such properties. In addition, around 75% of London social renters hold UK passports. Different figures from both Oxford’s Migration Observatory and the 2021 census show there are far fewer social renters in London who were migrants than of those born in the UK. Census figures further suggest foreign-born tenants are not using an outsized proportion of the housing stock.
