Publisher’s rating: Het bericht is fout.

Publisher’s rating: Falso
The review investigates a viral image circulated on social media claiming that bananas block coronavirus from entering cells. The message attributed this effect to lectin, described as an anti-COVID substance, and claimed that an antigen discovered in potassium could resist the virus; it recommended eating one banana a day. The review identifies the claim as false and examines both the purported attribution and the proposed biological explanation. To check the attribution, Newtral says it found a cardiovascular and thoracic-surgery professional named Sudhansu Bhattacharyya on the hospital website named in the viral message, but found no online study or publication linking him to COVID-19 or bananas. The outlet also says it tried to contact the center and received no response. The review also cites the World Health Organization’s statement that no medicine had been shown to prevent or cure COVID-19, and reports that pharmacist Antonio Blanes found no evidence that foods prevent the virus from entering cells or that lectin has an effect on it. He further explained that potassium is a mineral, not a source of antigens that resist COVID-19. These points directly contradict the viral message’s central mechanism; the review does not present evidence that bananas prevent infection.
