EXPERTOS BELGAS PIDEN QUE SE INVESTIGUE A LA OMS POR FALSA PANDEMIA DEL COVID-19
Publisher’s rating: Impreciso

The claim concerns a Facebook post alleging that a healthy six-year-old girl from near Schweinfurt, Bavaria, died of “CO2 poisoning” after wearing a mask on a school bus. The review reports that the Bavarian police had publicly warned about this specific story and said they knew of no such incident in Unterfranken, the region around Schweinfurt. The review also reports that a police spokesperson described the story as “internet fairy tales” in comments to dpa. The spokesperson said worried citizens had contacted police after the posts circulated, and that investigators were looking into who had spread the claim. This supports the conclusion that the authorities treated the circulating account as false, while the excerpt does not describe an independently identified child or a documented death. As additional context, the review points to an earlier dpa fact-check rejecting the broader assertion that wearing a mask reduces oxygen intake. That earlier finding concerns the general mask-and-oxygen claim; the evidence addressing this particular alleged death is the police response to reports of the story.

The Facebook post attributed to the CDC the claim that there was no evidence that COVID-19 could be transmitted through the air. The review examined the CDC’s information on how COVID-19 spreads and found that its published guidance described several routes of transmission: close contact and respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes or speaks. The guidance said those droplets could reach the mouth or nose or be inhaled into the lungs. (The review describes the CDC as having changed its recommendations, without questioning airborne transmission itself.)

Publisher’s rating: Der Post lässt Informationen weg.
The Facebook post said that Belgium’s planned changes to its coronavirus response would mean using hospital admissions instead of PCR tests as a measure of the virus’s spread. The review says the post left out important context: Belgium continued to use PCR tests as an important basis for its coronavirus statistics, and decisions about measures also took hospital capacity into account. The review identifies the announcement as having been made by Prime Minister Sophie Wilmès on 23 September, with changes taking effect in October. The review describes two strands of the announced approach: expanded testing to identify more infections, and a planned epidemic “barometer” at national and regional levels. Hospital admissions were initially intended to be its main indicator, but positive PCR tests were also relevant to assessing the situation. Thus, the review distinguishes the proposed use of admissions as a principal indicator for decisions from abandoning PCR testing or removing PCR results from the assessment. The review also reports that the plan to base measures primarily on hospital admissions drew criticism: because admissions lag behind infection increases, relying on them could mean losing time while the virus was already spreading widely. It separately notes that some rules were changing, including outdoor mask requirements and a seven-day quarantine for suspected cases, while other restrictions remained in force.

The review examines Donald Trump’s assertion during the 2020 presidential campaign that Joe Biden would “close the entire country.” It distinguishes Biden’s support for stricter measures to limit coronavirus transmission from a promise to shut down the whole economy. According to the review, Biden said in an ABC interview that he would close the country to stop the virus’s spread if scientists recommended it. The review also points to Biden’s campaign website, which described plans to reopen schools and the economy safely. Taken together, these details show that the claim omitted the scientific condition Biden stated and misstated his position as a blanket promise to close the country.
