Publisher’s rating:

The review examines a report about a newly identified COVID-19 variant found among travellers from Tanzania arriving in Angola. It describes the claim as involving a variant that might spread readily and that vaccines might not work against. The review says the variant was identified through travel surveillance and discusses research by the Krisp Institute, which conducts genetic testing for ten African countries. According to the review’s account of that study, the variant had 31 amino-acid mutations and was more changed than the other variants compared. The review also cites Tulio de Oliveira, the institute’s director, as saying it showed greater transmissibility and resistance to antibodies produced by infection or vaccination. This supports a concern about possible reduced protection; it does not establish that vaccines were wholly useless. The review characterizes the variant as particularly concerning, but preserves an important limit: at the time described, it was not certain whether the variant had spread beyond African countries. Its conclusion endorses the report’s central claims, while the supplied excerpt does not provide the study itself, underlying measurements, or further evidence to independently assess the strength of those claims.

FACT CHECK:

Publisher’s rating: Misleading

The claim concerned a social-media image presenting a newspaper headline as a quotation from Wimal Weerawansa: that nobody would die from eating a little poisonous coconut oil. The review says the image circulated widely, and reports that its investigation found he had not made that statement. The claim was therefore about the authenticity of a specific purported newspaper report, not a general statement about coconut oil.

The claim concerned a post linking the lifting of Texas’s mask mandate to a sharp fall in hospital admissions, citing admissions at their lowest level since October. The review says the referenced article was published on 5 April 2021 and that Texas’s measure took effect on 10 March. It challenges the implied cause-and-effect relationship: the decline in admissions was already underway when the mandate was lifted, so the timing does not show that lifting the rule produced the decline. The review also notes that the order did not mean masks were no longer required everywhere. Businesses, restaurants and public institutions could still set their own requirements, and many chose to keep requiring masks. It cites research and a Politifact fact-check as evidence that mask mandates had measurable effects on COVID-19 statistics, and argues that removing a mandate would not itself make infections or hospitalizations fall. For the figures, the review reports that Texas had 3,161 hospital admissions on 29 March, when the copied article was published, and that this was the state’s lowest level since October 2020. It distinguishes that factual observation from the article’s causal implication: the review says the decline was part of a broader fall in hospitalizations across the United States, not an effect attributable to Texas’s policy change. It also points to California, where admissions were falling despite a mask mandate still being in force, as a comparison that likewise does not establish a direct policy effect.

The claim appeared alongside a chart purporting to show occupied and available intensive-care beds and emergency reserves in Germany. The review says the chart matched data on the official DIVI intensive-care register, but argues that the social-media post drew an incorrect conclusion from it: the decline in free beds did not demonstrate that beds had been deliberately removed. A bed could be reported as available only if a hospital had the doctors and nurses needed to care for a patient in it; staffing rules changed during the pandemic, and staff absences also affected what hospitals could report as usable capacity. The figures in the review show why the chart could give a misleading impression. Across Germany, occupied beds remained roughly stable at 19,000–21,000, while the number of free beds and the emergency reserve declined. The review attributes the reduction in reported free capacity in part to staffing constraints, rather than an intentional bed cut. It also explains that a national occupancy total can conceal local strain: heavy demand in some regions can be averaged together with lower demand elsewhere. The review gives specific examples of that local pressure. In early April, an intensive-care physician said Cologne and Düsseldorf each had only 22 free intensive-care beds, fewer than 10 percent of their capacity, and described a similar situation in other large cities and metropolitan areas. The post also omitted evidence of operational strain: on March 31, 424 intensive-care units reported restricted operations and 285 reported partial restrictions, while 471 reported normal operations. By the review’s later comparison, more units reported restricted operations (475) than normal operations (421).

The claim concerned a blog post saying a British government study showed that people already vaccinated twice would dominate a rise in Covid-19 deaths and hospital admissions. The review identifies the cited study as a scientific model of a possible future course of the pandemic in Britain if restrictions were eased; it was not a report of observed deaths or admissions. The document was presented by the government’s scientific pandemic working group on 31 March. The model’s scenario assumed all four planned reopening steps had occurred by the end of June, reopening public life and increasing contacts and infections, and that 95% of people over 50 had received two doses by then. It also assumed that two doses protected 90% of recipients from severe disease requiring hospitalisation, while 10% were not protected against that outcome. With infections rising, the review explains, that remaining vulnerable vaccinated group could nevertheless account for a larger share of hospital patients in July and August because it would still be a large group in the population. That conditional scenario does not establish that vaccinated people were actually driving a current increase, nor that vaccination caused illness. The review notes that the model describes a possible scenario rather than a precise forecast, and says people without vaccine protection remained more susceptible to severe Covid-19. It also cites the review’s account that none of the twice-vaccinated participants in AstraZeneca’s approval trials had to be hospitalised with a coronavirus infection.

The Facebook post compared more than 15,000 reported COVID-19 deaths from December 2019 to February 2021 with purported flu deaths in earlier winters, then divided the COVID-19 figure across two winters. The review says the comparison rests on figures that do not measure the same thing: the 65,000 deaths cited for the 2014–2015 flu-epidemic period were total deaths from all causes, not deaths attributed to flu. The RIVM’s estimate for that period was more than 8,600 deaths above expected levels. The review notes that this excess mortality may be associated with flu, but other factors, including cold, can contribute.

A group of Travellers was protesting outside a Dublin Pfizer facility and refusing to leave until they got the Covid-19 vaccine.

Publisher’s rating: False

The claim concerned a video of Travellers arriving in a convoy and parking at Grange Castle Industrial Estate in Kilmahuddrick, Dublin. The WhatsApp message described them as “setting up outside Pfizer in Dublin” and said they would not move until they got the vaccine. The review reports that Garda sources, a Garda spokesperson and a senior Pfizer source said the group had stopped briefly while travelling elsewhere, rather than protesting. Pfizer also said the group had not approached or communicated with the company. The review’s account of the video does not substantiate a vaccine demand: the people shown could not be seen, and the audio captured joking remarks, including a voice saying, “They think we have the vaccine here”. The review interpreted this as a joke among people at the site. It also reports that Gardaí in the area determined that the car park was being used as a stop-off while the group moved elsewhere. A South Dublin County Council spokeswoman separately said caravans had been illegally parked at a site in Grange Castle Business Park since 10 April and that procedures were being arranged to secure the site’s vacant possession. That statement concerns the parking and the council’s response; it does not say the group was seeking vaccines. On the evidence described, the review found no support for the claim that the group was protesting for access to vaccines.
