The claim concerns quotes circulated on Facebook that portray French economist Jacques Attali as advocating euthanasia for older people and other groups described as weak, unproductive or unintelligent. The dpa review traces the wording to fragments of a 1981 conversation published in Michel Salomon’s book *L’avenir de la vie*, rather than treating the viral wording as a faithful quotation. The review says the viral quote is not something Attali said and that it appears to have been assembled from parts of that conversation. The excerpts from the conversation distinguish Attali’s discussion of economic and social logic from an endorsement of killing the groups named in the Facebook post. On life expectancy, he describes a system that values extending people’s lives for their productivity, then discusses the costs society associates with life after 60 or 65. He goes on to say that, in his view, society should prioritize quality of life within a given lifespan rather than extending it while incurring high medical costs. The review also gives the surrounding distinction in Attali’s discussion of euthanasia: it describes euthanasia as a future instrument under different social systems, including as a freedom in socialist logic and as a potential commodity in a capitalist society. Those passages are not the Facebook post’s alleged program targeting named categories of people. The review adds that Attali told dpa he had won several French defamation cases over accusations based on the 1981 remarks.

The claim circulated with a Facebook image about British scientist Mike Yeadon. The image attributed two predictions to him: that about 0.8% of people would die within two weeks of a first COVID-19 vaccine injection, and that survivors would have an average life expectancy of two years. The image included a link to an article on LifeSiteNews.

The claim attributes a prediction of certain, early death to Michael Yeadon and says it came from an interview. The review traces the attribution to a LifeSiteNews article summarizing an interview with Yeadon, but reports that the quotation is not in that article. It also says a search across the website using words from the alleged quotation returned no results. The review checked an archived version of the article dated April 7 and likewise found no such quotation. In addition, LifeSiteNews told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur that Yeadon had not made the statement in an interview with them. These checks address both the article cited as the quotation’s source and the publication’s account of whether he said it in an interview.

The post cited in the review showed a table said to come from WITS and argued that many countries had ordered large quantities of PCR tests in 2018. The review examined the table’s label and the WITS data behind it, rather than treating the post’s description as proof of what the 2018 trade figures measured. It reports that the table’s Facebook title could not be found on WITS for 2018; the corresponding WITS entry was titled “Medical Diagnostic Test Instruments and Apparatus (902780) exports by country.” The review explains that the COVID-related label was added later to older trade statistics. In a statement dated 8 September 2020, the World Bank said that products tracked in WITS before the pandemic had used specialist labels, and that the COVID-19 test kits were developed in January 2020. In March 2020, the WHO and World Customs Organization published a list of products used for COVID-19, including less technical labels; WITS then applied the “COVID-19 test kit” label to older statistics for medical equipment used in the response. The review notes that the listed medical products included older items such as respirators and hand sanitizers. The key distinction is therefore between historical trade data for medical diagnostic equipment and evidence that countries ordered COVID-19 tests in 2018. The review says the World Bank later changed the WITS display label to “Medical Examinations,” explaining that COVID-19 tests did not exist before 2020. It also reports that misleading statistics for these products had circulated online for 2017. On the evidence described, the table’s later COVID-related label does not establish that the 2018 figures were orders for COVID-19 PCR tests.
