The review examined a Facebook post shared by the Mouvement Fédératif Romand, which alleged that blood could be contaminated with SARS-CoV-2 or its vaccine during a transfusion and that authorities were not addressing the danger. The investigation says a transfusion recipient is not at risk of receiving contaminated blood from either a vaccinated donor or someone with Covid-19. It explains that SARS-CoV-2 spreads between people through close contact, droplets, aerosols, and surfaces or hands—not through transfused blood. The article also addresses the vaccine part of the claim. It describes the different approaches used by Covid-19 vaccines and reports that the four vaccines then authorized in Switzerland—Moderna, Pfizer/BioNTech, Johnson & Johnson, and Novavax—did not contain live pathogens. It cites Swissmedic’s statement that the vaccines contain no virus and that transmission of a vaccine, its components, or coronavirus from a vaccinated person to an unvaccinated person through vaccination is impossible. A blood-donation deferral after vaccination did exist, but the review distinguishes that precaution from a transfusion-contamination risk. Transfusion CRS Suisse advised a 48-hour wait after vaccination before donating; the article says this was a precaution for possible symptoms such as fever, not a prohibition or evidence that blood was contaminated.

Pomegranate can cure arthritis
Publisher’s rating: Half True
Related reporting describes possible anti-inflammatory and joint-pain benefits from pomegranate, not a cure for arthritis. One article says pomegranate compounds have been studied for potential benefits in conditions including arthritis; another says consuming pomegranate seeds may help reduce swelling or joint pain and may help prevent osteoarthritis. The latter also says more research is needed. These statements support a possible benefit, not the stronger claim that pomegranate cures arthritis. The excerpts do not describe a clinical trial showing that pomegranate cured arthritis, nor do they provide evidence that it can replace established treatment. Their wording is qualified: one reports potential benefits, while the other reports possible symptom relief and calls for more research. On the evidence provided, the claim of a cure is not substantiated.

The claim originated in a Vancouver Times article saying that Justin Bieber had admitted a COVID-19 vaccine was responsible for his facial paralysis and had ruined his life, and that he wanted to take Pfizer to court. The dpa review identifies that website as the source of the allegation and concludes that the article was satirical, not a genuine account of Bieber’s statements or plans.
Publisher’s rating: Das FDA-Dokument enthält keine neuen Informationen.
The claim concerns an FDA document released in connection with a June 7, 2022 recommendation by an FDA advisory committee to authorize Novavax’s COVID-19 vaccine. The review says the document summarized evidence about Novavax’s safety and effectiveness, and also discussed myocarditis and pericarditis because these were already known, very rare side effects associated with mRNA COVID-19 vaccines. It identifies the passage used to suggest the FDA had acknowledged long-term harms: short-term follow-up indicated that symptoms resolved in most people, while information about possible long-term effects was not yet available. (S1) The review explains that this passage does not establish that new injuries arise long after vaccination. It distinguishes effects that begin after a long delay from effects that persist over time, and reports that experts were not aware of side effects first appearing long after vaccination; when vaccine side effects occur, they do so within days or weeks. The passage instead concerns uncertainty about whether lasting problems remain in some people after myocarditis. Most cases heal completely, the review says, but lasting impairment in severe individual cases cannot be ruled out, and how often that happens had not been adequately studied. (S1) The document also addressed myocarditis cases following Novavax vaccination. The review reports that the FDA considered a causal link plausible in four cases, and that all four patients recovered fully; in two other cases, alternative causes were considered plausible, though a vaccine connection was not entirely excluded. The review says these few cases were observed during clinical testing, prompting concern that myocarditis might occur more often with Novavax than with mRNA vaccines, where cases became apparent after authorization and vaccination of a much larger population. It concludes that interpreting the passage as an admission of newly emerging long-term vaccine damage misrepresents what the document says: it describes limited information about possible lasting outcomes after a rare adverse event.
The claim concerned a letter purportedly sent to unvaccinated people in New Zealand, threatening a $15,000 fine or six months in prison from 1 June 2022 if they did not get vaccinated. The review examined an image presented as a letter from New Zealand’s Director-General of Health and noted that the same claim was circulating on social media. Its conclusion was that the letter was not an official government communication and its threats did not reflect government policy. The review described several checks on the document. The shared image appeared identical wherever it was posted, including the same text and the same name crossed out; the review reasoned that genuine letters sent to multiple recipients would likely have generated more than one photographed copy. It also pointed to wording inconsistent with official usage: the letter used “Covid 19 SARS-2,” although the ministry used “SARS-CoV-2,” and it said “6 months jail time,” whereas the review said the law uses “imprisonment” and the ministry uses “prison term.” Most directly, the New Zealand Ministry of Health examined the letter at dpa’s request and said it was not an official letter. The review also checked the asserted policy against the ministry website, where it found no such measure after 1 June, and set the claim against changes to existing rules. It reported that New Zealand had not required vaccination of the entire population; some occupational mandates had existed, but in April the country removed vaccine passes for shops and venues and ended work-vaccination requirements for, among others, teachers and police and defence employees. Some roles in the latter groups remained subject to a requirement.
pineapple can improve bone health
Publisher’s rating: Half True
Related reporting connects pineapple with bone health by including it in a list of vitamin C-rich foods described as additions to a bone-building diet. The excerpt also says the article discusses a study of vitamin C intake and muscle mass among middle-aged and older participants. It does not report that the study tested pineapple or measured whether eating it improved bone health. The evidence therefore supports a narrower point: pineapple is presented as one possible source of vitamin C within a bone-focused diet. It does not establish a direct benefit from pineapple itself, or show how much pineapple would be needed to produce one.
