In 1980, Jimmy Carter "was defeated by a conservative governor (Ronald Reagan) from a blue state who knew how to get results."

Publisher’s rating: California wasn't blue then

Research from related reporting confirms two parts of the claim’s setting: Reagan had been elected governor of California, and he defeated incumbent President Jimmy Carter in 1980. One excerpt says Reagan “was elected governor of California in 1966 and served two terms” before becoming the Republican presidential nominee; it also states, “In November that year, Reagan defeated incumbent President Jimmy Carter.” Another account likewise says he defeated Carter in the 1980 election. Those details do not establish the claim’s central characterization of California as a blue state in 1980. Nor do the excerpts provide evidence for the claim that Reagan “knew how to get results.” The supplied research therefore supports the governorship and election details, but does not resolve the disputed description of California or the asserted assessment of Reagan’s effectiveness.
